I purchased this for a center piece to be auctioned away. But I wanted it!!! A fantastic book. Wonder photos, write-ups. I just may buy one for myself.Definitely worth the price. Excellent for reading when you only have a brief time to spend in a book.

makes a great gift for any special women in your life. great photos and bios on these legendary women!

I bought this as a gift for a friend and she loved it. The pictures are great quality and the mini biographies give a quick and easy depiction of these women who have truly changed the world.

I like books about smart women. The stories and pictures in this book are great. They inspired me to dig iinto the stories and pictures of legendary women in my own family.I bought this Used-Like New on Amazon.

My daughter loved this and helped her in school

Lovely photos but not enough information about Audrey.

Rather ironic, really, that the editor of this fine book is a man ~ unless "John Miller" is the nom de guerre of some radical female. Still, editing the book can't have been very hard; Miller had some excellent writers to work with. The selection of the legends is somewhat more questionable. Of the fifty, less then twenty are neither from nor intimately associated with the United States; in the effort to remind people of the ability of the other gender to produce legends, the publishers have largely neglected the largest portion of that gender. And as if that restriction is not enough, the editor has not included anyone for whom a photograph is not available, thus denying any woman from the first 95% of history the opportunity to be a legend. Funnily enough, these censures aside, i really enjoyed this book. Quite unlike the usual "feminist book" (i hate the quotes, but you have to admit they belong there), this is neither strident not shrill, nor even obnoxious. It is beautifully written, nicely put together, with superb selection of wonderful photographs of handsome people. Can't ask for much more than that, eh?

I initially borrowed this from the library, I picked it up because I loved the photo of Audrey. Every page is a little feast of information and every photo a work of 'Art'. I need say no more.

Matthew Restall's "Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest" is an illuminating introduction to the Conquest of the Americas. The value of Restall's book is that it provides a broad overview of the facts, circumstances and personalities of the Conquest while diving deeper into particular "myths" around which Restall organizes his book.Although he calls his chapters "myths," it isn't clear to me that these are myths in the sense that they are erroneous things that people think about when they think of the Spanish Conquest. A lot of the myths are things that we don't normally think about at all, albeit if pushed to take a position, we might adopt the "mythicist" position sketched by Restall. For example, not all conquistadors were white, some were Africans who transitioned from slave to successful conquistadors while enslaved. This is a fascinating bit of history, particularly fascinating in the idea that a person from a sub-Saharan African tribe could make his way successfully into a completely alien culture. Is there a myth that all Conquistadors were white? I suspect that the answer is that most people just haven't thought about the subject. What we get from Restall's book is that the Conquistadors, generally acting as entrepreneurial free companies with only the most limited backing of their sovereign, had perfected a technique of conquest, which basically involved descending on the next likely looking territory, enlisting native allies, capturing the native leader and massacring natives where necessary. The strategy worked like gang-busters, particularly when aided along by the introduction of European diseases that killed off 90% of the native population. To the natives, it must have looked like the end of the world.Restall explores this strategy by a series of chapters addressing his "myths." In chapter one, Restall points out that it was not a "handful of adventurers" that conquered the Americas. It was a handful of adventurers backed by huge numbers of native allies. In chapter two, Restall points out that the conquistadors were not armies of the King. They were usually scratch troops put together on the spot of whoever was feeling like making a fortune. In chapter three, Restall introduces the reader to the African slaves who made up a substantial portion of the Spanish forces. In chapter four, Restall explains the idea of the completion of the Conquest was overstated; there were free Mayan groups in the Yucatan into the Twentieth Century. Chapter five discusses the asymmetry of communication. The Spanish were fortunate to find native speakers who could communicate with the Spanish. Thus, Cortez spoke to a shipwrecked Spaniard who spoke a Mayan language, who in turn spoke to Malinche - the Aztec princess who became Cortez' mistress - who could speak to the Aztecs. The Aztecs and other natives did not have that kind of access to the intelligence that knowing the other's language provided. In chapter six, Restall disputes the myth that the Indians were totally and utterly destroyed by the Conquest. The seventh chapter discusses why there should be such mythic understandings of the Conquest, i.e., outmanned adventurers conquering mighty civilizations by sheer cultural superiority. This is a good book for those who are looking for an introduction to the subject. I read this book while listening to the Teaching Company lecture series on the Conquest of the Americas. I heartily recommend that combination as a way getting immersed in this important but often forgotten studied bit of history.

"Seven Myths" is one of the most important pieces of revisionist history with respect to how the Spanish pressed their conquest of those parts of the Americas that came under their influence. It challenges and gives nuance to the standard narrative at almost every turn. One must know that narrative, as told, for instance, by Hugh Thomas in Conquest, in order to appreciate the depth of research that went into the "Seven Myths" and the changes in perspective it demands of those desiring to understand how history changing was the encounter between Europe and the Americas. The bibliography is definitive up to the time of publication.

I like the way the book was written. It gives 7 myths and the truth of the conquest .

Good quality. Good price. Arrived quickly.

I understand

As a history major in college I have found this book intriguing in its perceptions of how we humans would like to view ourselves versus what actually dictates the perception of ourselves and reception of others culturally. As a person of mixed descent by result of the "Colombian exchange" I found the book to give more possibilities in the origins of American cultures and familial histories. It is surely a book to be taken into pondering

Excellent book!!!! I had to but this for my class turns out it really is not a bad book. If you love history this book is a must read for you.

A different approach to the history of the conquest of the Aztec Empire by Cortez. If the reader has studied the history as presented in other writing, this will give him/her a new angle to contemplate.

The New Jewish Holiday Cookbook, by Gloria Kaufer Greene

From Library Journal

Jewish cookbooks have become a rapidly burgeoning category. Appearing at the beginning of the annual cycle that starts with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, three of these four new titles focus on Jewish holidays and holy days, while Friedland's concentrates just on the Sabbath. Greene's book, a revision of her 1985 title, is by far the most ambitious of the group, with more than 250 recipes (80 or so entirely new, the others thoroughly revised) for all the major holidays and some minor ones, and including Israel's Independence Day as well as religious celebrations. A cooking teacher and the longtime food editor of the Baltimore Jewish Times, Greene also offers extensive background on each holiday, and her diverse recipes are from all around the globe. Highly recommended. Recently, a growing number of Jews have found themselves returning to their religious roots and observances they have let lapse, making Friedland's book on celebrating the Sabbath particularly timely. A cookbook editor and author of The Passover Cookbook, Friedland presents 175 recipes for the three meals of Shabbat (Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, and the "third meal," marking the end of the Sabbath later on Saturday). Like Greene's, her recipes are international in scope, reflecting both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic heritages, and her text is readable and informative. Recommended for most collections. Brownstein, the former art director of Good Housekeeping and House Beautiful, offers a lavishly illustrated crafts book with recipes and ideas for the holidays. For each holiday, there is a menu, several crafts projects, and decorating suggestions. Brownstein's approach will not be to everyone's taste (the three sukkahs for Sukkot, for example, include a "fantasy" Penthouse Sukkah, "high-tech and sleek," but the minimatzo vases for the Passover seder are pretty cute). For larger collections. Rubin seems like a nice woman, but would her cookbooks have been published if she weren't actor/singer Mandy Patinkin's mother? Her second book, which opens with "testimonials" from grandchildren and other family members, includes recipes for Thanksgiving, a bridal luncheon, and a barbecue as well as for four major Jewish holidays. The recipes are simple, and many of them rely on convenience foods; some have little to do with traditional Jewish holiday cooking (the buffet menu includes Mexicali Layered Dip and two shellfish dishes). Only for collections where Rubin's Grandma Doralee Patinkin's Jewish Family Cookbook is popular. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Holidays are the anchor points for Jewish life. They illustrate the ancient Hebrew stories, offering specific lessons about Jewish history, new learning for the young, and recollection for the old. Greene has expanded her earlier cookbook for Jewish holidays, adding new recipes that reflect even more holiday traditions. Starting with the chief and weekly holiday, Sabbath, Greene offers tasty recipes that occasionally draw on ingredients outside traditional ones. Her cornbread uses both cornmeal and canned creamed corn, thus employing two forms of a grain not usually associated with historic Jewish cuisine. Other recipes, such as an Israeli potato-and-ground-beef casserole, seem ordinary and unthreatening even to non-Jewish cooks. Greene labels each recipe as "meat," "dairy," or "pareve" so that readers may determine instantly how the recipe correlates with dietary laws. Recommended for public libraries serving Jewish populations. Mark Knoblauch

I bought this 1999 book when my copy of the first edition became unusable. This revised edition is a plumped-up version of the 1985 original text. It has more recipes and a few more stories, but more isn't better throughout.Greene notes that she revised several recipes from the first edition, but the changes are not always improvements; for example, the Orange Honey Cake in the original book's Days of Awe chapter called for both white and whole wheat flours, and the cake was spectacular, but the new version uses all white flour, which reduces both nutrition and flavor. Also, not all of the new recipes are winners; for instance, the Black Beans and Rice Casserole in the Hanukkah chapter tasted as bland and uninspired as hospital food. It took a lot of salt added at the table, along with spicy salsa, to make the dish palatable enough to eat.The new edition is organized by holiday (as was the original book), starting with the Jewish sabbath, and that structure makes sense. The Pesach (Passover) chapter is excellent, with lots of main dishes, sides, and desserts for this holiday that has unique food and ingredient restrictions. But some of the new recipes, such as Iced Cinnamon Buns in the Hanukkah chapter and Glorious Oatmeal Cookies in the Lag B'Omer chapter, have no connection to these holidays. As I read the new edition, I thought that the new recipes could form a separate cookbook of Greene's favorites apart from Jewish cooking. The 1985 edition is a keeper. The best parts of this 1999 edition are the unchanged carryovers from the original, but some of the new material, such as the Gloria's Glorious Challah recipe that uses fast-rising yeast instead of regular yeast, is helpful in a 21st-Century kitchen.

I don't buy a lot of recipe books -- but when I saw a friend at the grocery store pull out her copy of this book, I had to ask why she brought a cookbook shopping with her. She said she loved this book, made a lot of its recipes around every holiday, and it was just easier than making a list. AND that she loved this book so much that when she accidentally left her first copy in the produce section, never to be seen again, she almost immediately bought another copy. Such an endorsement... and I need every kitchen inspiration I can get (as a not-enthusiatic cook). Every recipe is useful and a keeper -- and most are good anytime of the year. Cous-cous aux sept legumes is a family favorite (without the lamb -- we've even made a vegetarian version). Finally, it is a recipe book for everyone, despite the "Jewish" part of the title.

excellent explanations of the jewish holidays and jewish culure through food. this book has some great recipes. they are affordable, innovative and useful for everyday cooking too.

This is an excellent cookbook but hardly any picture. Is out of print.

Very happy with my purchase

great cookbook, I really enjoy it!

It has the recipe for Mitzapawny soup.

`The New Jewish Holiday Cookbook' by Gloria Kauler Greene and `The Essential Book of Jewish Festival Cooking' by Phyllis Glazer and Miryam Glazer are two leading representatives of a great cookbook subgenre which may be unique among all cookbook flavors in that they represent that extraordinary relation between Judaism and food. Like the exceptional `Jewish Holiday Cookbook' by Joan Nathan and unlike the encyclopedic `New York Times Cookbook of Jewish Recipes', both books spend much space and words on the practice of kashrut or keeping kosher. But this is not the whole story. There are numerous Jewish culinary traditions which are not directly related to kashrut, such as the traditions surrounding the number of challah loaves baked for the Shabbat or the number of bumps on the challah loaves (The magic number here is 12, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, so the tradition is to have 12 loaves. More practical is the tradition to have two loaves each with 6 bumps created by the braiding of the bread before baking.)There is one major difference among these three books which is evident in their titles. Ms. Glazer's book deals with `festival' cooking while Nathan and Greene deal with `Holiday' cooking. The subtle difference here is that the festival book does not cover Shabbat and the two `holiday' books do.To a non-Jew, my guess is that since there are 52 shabbats in a year, while there are at most seven or eight major `festivals', it is much more important to have a book covering Shabbat as well as the yearly holidays. Between Greene and the Glazers, I find at least one other big difference in that Ms. Greene gives far more coverage to the creation of challah, which may be the single most important Jewish holiday recipe in any of these books, as it seems to be the one food which tradition calls for at every Shabbat. In fact, even though Joan Nathan's book combines two books, one of which is on Jewish holiday baking, Ms. Greene's treatment of challah, at least in the details she give for braiding several different numbers of dough strands is the most extensive. Among the recipes from the three books, the amateur bread baker in me prefers Ms. Nathan's recipe, as it uses the least (1 packet) yeast and calls for the longest raising time. She (and Ms. Greene) also use my preferred `active dry yeast' rather than the `rapid rise' yeast. All three books deal in depth with Jewish holiday traditions, although Ms. Glazer and Ms. Greene seem to have better rabbinical sources and seem to be more dedicated to the details of the traditions. Of the three, Ms. Greene seems to touch me more effectively in her discussion of these traditions than the other two.All three writers are primarily from the Ashkenazy tradition, although all three also give fair treatment to Sephardic dishes and menus. If you are really interested in Sephardic menus primarily, Ms. Nathan spends much of her space on Sephardic menus. If you are willing to take a recommendation from a goyem, I recommend Ms. Greene's book most highly, followed by Ms. Nathan's book for her many baking recipes; however, all three are quality books.

My 5th grader reads aloud for 45 minutes every day. This has been a life-changing book for her (and myself) as it opens littles eyes to a world they take for granted. We have paused many times throughout to talk about various life-lessons, gratitude, faith, judgement and prejudice, humanity, culture, oppression, victory, perspective and on and on... we cried and laughed -and are still talking about it... Martin and Caitlin and their families are now part of our day to day lives and conversations... exceptional and brilliant presentation for all ages. Thank you.

When I ordered this book, I was intrigued by the story of friendship between two teens from opposite sides of the world. The early chapters establish the contrast between the lives of a teen enjoying the amenities of suburban American life as compared with her Zimbabwean counterpart, who must set aside his studies in search of the basics for the survival of his family. These two teens initially understand so little about each others' lives, families, cultures, and countries but share an inquisitiveness that slowly fosters a lasting friendship. I returned to their stories with the same eagerness they felt awaiting an answer to their last letter and found myself crying over the sincerity of the struggle to help a friend transition from the depths of poverty. I visited Zimbabwe many years ago and was happy to read about the familiar sights as well as recall the warmth of its people - so sad to know how difficult life has become there. So much was accomplished through the penpal diplomacy of these two teens and their supportive families - we all have much to learn from their example.

I started reading this because it was a summer reading requirement for my son, as he prepares to middle school. I loved the honest, real story, starting with Martin just wanting to connect with Caitlin as one kid to another, rather than his status impacting her opinion of him. Then, his story unfolded in ways that helped both change their worlds and those of many others. In times when Americans are so fortunate to have so much, this book represents a hopeful, honest reminder about life in less fortunate parts of the world, inspiring us to do more, give more, and be more for others.

I bought this book because I had 100+ penpals when I was in middle and high school. They were from all around the world. I have found I learned so much about the world from my penpals.Honestly, I couldn’t put the book down. I remember waiting so long for letters from Mauritius or Lithuania or Tonga. In the 1970s, mail might have taken longer, but it was so exciting to get letters from friends. As I’ve grown older and the internet & social media has brought the world even closer, I have found some of my penpals! It is great to know what they are doing at the same time I’m reading their post! Waiting for letters and packages to arrive instilled patience.Caitlin and Martin, thank you for writing this book together. It is beautifully written. Martin, you are a strong man! Blessings to your family here and in Zimbabwe. Caitlin, you must be a person who loves the world like I do! We have 2 Russian Imports ourselves! We adopted 2 children from Kaliningrad, Russia in 2004. They are not biologically related but they are brother & sister.I will be recommending this to my penpal reconnections on Facebook. Thank you so much for bringing back good teenage memories.

I really liked I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda. The book is well written and it draws you in. This is an excellent book for junior high aged children. This book tells us that people in American or Zimbabwe are not that much different. People want the opportunity to further their education, so they can make a meaningful living and support their families. The book is about an American girl and a boy from Zimbabwe and how becoming pen pals changed their lives, their families and their friends. A simple act of kindness can have an impact that is far reaching.I would highly recommend I Will Always Write Back to readers who like: memoirs, writing letters, stories about courage, trying hard and happy endings.

I happened to ask a friends daughter what her favorite book was. That's how I discovered this book. I highly recommend this book and the story it tells. It pulled me in as soon as I started reading it. The true story is very inspiring. Teens will enjoy reading it but it's not just for teens. People of all ages will enjoy reading it too. It's a story about pen pals and how one girl and her family were able to provide a future for a boy from Africa. In the process, they learned about each other's cultures; especially the hardships of Martin and his way of life and the lifestyle of Caitlin, and the things taken for granted in America. It's a quick read because once start reading the book, you won't want to put it down. Get the book and enjoy yourself!

I purchased this ebook this morning while pursuing my daily Kindle Book buys. The title caught my eye and I read the sample. I couldn’t stop reading it. A 12 year old girl in Pennsylvania writes a letter to a young boy in Zimbabwe. This starts them both on a path that would change both of their lives. An enjoyable read for young adults and anyone interested in seeing how being open, honest and kind to another person can transform lives.

I gave this book 5 stars because it is something all young people should read. I work in a high school of very privileged students. They could all learn something from Caitlin and Martin as their parents could learn too. What a beautiful story of friendship, generosity, and human kindness. There is hope for the world!

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did." —TIM FERRISS, author of The 4-Hour Workweek "[I] burned through the book in about an hour. Wow. Really. This book is packed with wisdom and it just makes you feel good reading it. Whether you are an entrepreneur, artist, or someone trying to figure out your next project or next theme of your life, this book is for you!Derek does an outstanding job simplifying the lessons through his life and business experience. Here's a couple key points that hit home:1. It should NEVER be about the money. If you're in a business or pursuing a dream for the money chase, that chase will lead you down the wrong path.2. It's always about the customer. Whenever making a business decision, Derek always asks what would the customer say about this decision I'm making. So many cool stories of the simple small things Derek did that his customers loved.3. Business (or lifestyle) should be based around what you want. It should be your utopia, too many entrepreneurs try to please other people, investors, etc. and lose sight of what really matter to them. Derek explains this process through his incredible business journey.Thank you Derek for bring this book to the world!!

I added this to my list of books to read after it being recommended by Shawn Blanc's monthly book club. Although new books go to the bottom of my list, this one looked like a quick read and given Easter Monday I was able to consume within the hour. What I liked about this book was Siver's open and honest approach to running a business. To him, it is about having fun, being happy and ultimately about the customer; money didn't play a role. It is certainty a healthy approach to have in a business however sometimes I think reality can bite into this approach given our fast paced world of technology and disruption. There were many anecdotes on both his successes and failures along with lessons we can all take from it. For example, the tried and true test of trusting and verifying, to delegate but not abdicate and to make every decision based on the impact to the customer. I don't believe that this approach to business works carte blanche in every industry and idea however there are some great fundamentals for any entrepreneur to take on board with a new venture.Three key takeaways from the book:1. Delegation is key in the business (especially when you grow), however, with delegation trust but verify. Furthermore delegation doesn't not mean abdication.2. If you're not saying "Hell Yeah!" to an idea/approach etc. then say no!3. Siver's Tao of Business: Care about your customers more than about yourself and you'll do well.

A nice, easy and brief read that's a manifestation of distilled knowledge acquired over decades of experience starting and building CDbaby. I've always enjoyed reading Derek's writing because it's so honest. He's genuine. When most business books tell you to maximize profitability and sell when the market tells you it's the right time to sell, Derek tells you to maximize your happiness and sell when your heart tells you it's the right time. The wisdom in this book reaches beyond business and entrepreneurship. The bites of gold sprinkled throughout this text are signposts to a path that should take you on a journey of a life well lived. Highly recommended.

I used to be a fan of the self-help books, all the way from Norman Vincent Peale to Dale Csrnegie to Anthony Robbins. The point of all of the reading was to just learn about living life at a higher frequency. But I started to move away from these because they made things look so very easy, to the point where I think they are almost irrelevant to the real world.I was brought to this book through Seth Godin's Blog. It was an excellent read to me because it seemed to be a very honest and realistic discourse. The points of inspiration in this book are not Pollyanna-ish in the least. Sivers made errors, retreated, emerged, retreated again and then emerged again. Ups and downs. No smooth path. And he relates it very clearly.I have built a successful business over the past 7 years but I have not enjoyed the ride. I am always looking to the end. But now that things are much better, I look back and see that I could have really enjoyed the process much more, and really it is the process that is the juice for me.Sivers distills this very very well in writing about his experiences. Reading this has shaken me up tonight and brought to the forefront of my mind thoughts that I need to make some serious changes finally that will make me happier and my business more successful.Thank you Derek Sivers for this book!

I truly enjoyed this one hour read. I've been telling my business owner friends for years that they don't own companies. Their companies own them. Derek Sivers is one of the few who understand that a company is not there to provide you with a place to sit all day long while your spouse and kids get old without your presence. If that is what you're into, probably not a book for you! If you want to learn to let go and let your business provide you with the kind of life you want, this is exactly the book you should read.
