Virtually useless. This book is so uselessly, poorly organized and written that I can't understand how it got published.I truly don't know if the author even knows what the Basque region is.The book does not cover the entire Basque region. Which, by the way, is not very big and would not be difficult to cover in one book. For that purpose, I highly recommend Rick Steve's book instead. After looking through this book, it's hard to figure out how it is organized. Because it isn't . There's one, small, generalized map that doesn't even cover the entire Basque Region. The map, like the content of this book, leaves out the entire French Basque region as well as the southern Basque region. This book only covers what is technically the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain, which is Araba, Bizkaia, and Gasteiz. Putting "Basque Region" on the cover of this book is very misleading.Regardless, the book is not very well organized. It has the most utterly useless edge index I've ever seen-- all the section markings are in one straight line through the entire book. There might as well be no edge index because, functionally speaking, there is none. This book is just a pile of disorganized information and a bunch of hotel and restaurant listings that the author could not possibly keep current. You're better off going with Rick Steve's book for information on sights and cultural events, etc. and using Yelp and Tripadvisor for hotel and restaurant info.

Why I Think Boys May Enjoy ThisIf ever there was a book series that could be used to introduce the concept of “anti-hero” to a middle grade audience, it is Artemis Fowl (or, you know, my novella Anchihiiroo – Origin of an Antihero, but I digress). Artemis Fowl II, in the debut book of this series, is the very definition of someone willing to do anything it takes (even a little kidnapping and ransom-demanding) for what is ultimately a good cause (trying to save his mother). One of my favorite things about this series is that Artemis, being a genius, has a very large vocabulary. The diction in this book is a lot more advanced and complex than many other middle grade books and I personally used it as a benchmark in my own writing for not talking down to a young audience (which I find many, many middle grade and even young adult books do). Colfer has found that great sweet spot to challenge young readers without dismissing their capabilities. That being said, the story is a simple one that is very easy and fun to follow. The basic frame of the story follows the “heist” format. There are twists and turns and plans on top of plans. Sometimes they work and sometimes they fail. Sometimes they seem to fail but end up working (think of a fairy tale version of Ocean’s 11). Apparently Colfer himself has referred to it as “Die Hard with fairies” with which I can’t argue. Colfer has created his own sub-society of magical fairy creatures that presents the underlying mystery and magic to the series. At the same time, Artemis is a regular (well, as regular as a multi-millionaire genius pre-teen with a bit of an evil mastermind complex can be) human kid who breaks open the mysteries of this underworld. When I first discovered this series years ago, I was excited to find a middle grade series that had a protagonist that wasn’t your bubbly “chosen one” stereotype. Artemis, due to his intelligence and resources, is way deeper and more complex than your typical middle grade hero. That alone is worth a read. Couple that with a fun and colorful underworld full of faeries, gnomes, and other supernatural beings and it’s a can’t-miss.Content/AppropriatenessThis book is more than appropriate for the youngest of readers. Any violence is cartoonish in nature, for the most part. There are no language or sexual content concerns either. As the series goes on, there are points that get a little darker, but never does Colfer waver from the PG family friendly nature of this first book.As an aside: there is also a wonderful graphic novel adaptation of this first book that can serve to help a struggling reader or a reader who might need a little more visual aides (or just someone who really likes graphic novels!).Rating5/5 Giant Cartoon Mallets from Toonopolis, The Blog's Books for Boys Review

I actually enjoyed this off-beat little book more than I had expected, considering it has taken me years to getting back to reading it. I originally bought it for a defunct e-reader connected to another store--and I never finished reading it. I started over at the beginning, since it had been so long since I first sat down with it. This is an interesting, quick read. The pacing is pretty good. The story is quite funny and charming at times.I do wish there had been some formatting differences for the rather frequent point-of-view shifts. Sometimes there was no indicator, such as spacing, asterisks, a divider, etc. There was a lot of "gross-out" content. I really grew a little weary of the dwarf and his flapped trousers... For parents, there is a bit of light swearing consisting of mostly "damn" and "hell" (and a few made-up and implied explicitive phrases). Some may be concerned about the death of a rabbit at the hands of the flap-trousered dwarf.Overall, this was an entertaining read. I will likely be "back" for book two, once I've cleared up some of my Kindle slush-pile. I don't regret re-purchasing this in Kindle format, at least, it filled a few sessions of light reading for a few days.

I made it a third of the way through this drivel before calling it quits. I had no preconceptions about this beyond seeing that is had a Disney designation on the title page. (Kindle format) The main character should be Foul, not Fowl. Rotten genius of a boy, Artemis does not say he is looking for gold to cure his mother or find his father. He is looking to revive the coffers of a thieving family. I see Disneyworld thrown out there quite often, guess a plug for the outrageously overpriced theme park (Anyone pick up that Artemis is the genius (f)owl from Disney's The Sword In The Stone?) The characters are one dimentional, the story went all over the place. While I had no problems with the vocabulary, who exactly is the author targeting?I My last point, and this can be said of every aspect of Amazon reviews, from books to other products: If you like something a lot, give it a 5 star rating. Hate it? Give it one. I get not being able to change your mind and not able to fix it here, but if you just flat out rate a book wrong, you do a disservice to the author. I have this book two stars only because someone took the time to write and publish a book. The only 1's I door out to to poorly written and poorly edited books. No excuse for bad editing.

This is a great introduction to Sci-Fi for any kid in love with fantasy. Colfer mixes "real" magic with scientific advancements to create a race of creatures utterly and believably delightful. The snarky and pithy dialogue mixed with potty humor (e.g. a dwarf who eats and digests soil is constantly farting dirt missiles at would-be assailants) is sure to captivate the 9-12 age range of both genders. There is a redemptive quality of the book. There's really only one character (the main female role) that is entirely "good" but nearly every character has positive moral growth even with all the stealing, fighting and poor model behavior throughout.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures

Amazon.com Review

Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, written with the deepest of human feeling. Sherwin Nuland said of the account, "There are no villains in Fadiman's tale, just as there are no heroes. People are presented as she saw them, in their humility and their frailty--and their nobility."

From School Library Journal

YA?A compelling anthropological study. The Hmong people in America are mainly refugee families who supported the CIA militaristic efforts in Laos. They are a clannish group with a firmly established culture that combines issues of health care with a deep spirituality that may be deemed primitive by Western standards. In Merced, CA, which has a large Hmong community, Lia Lee was born, the 13th child in a family coping with their plunge into a modern and mechanized way of life. The child suffered an initial seizure at the age of three months. Her family attributed it to the slamming of the front door by an older sister. They felt the fright had caused the baby's soul to flee her body and become lost to a malignant spirit. The report of the family's attempts to cure Lia through shamanistic intervention and the home sacrifices of pigs and chickens is balanced by the intervention of the medical community that insisted upon the removal of the child from deeply loving parents with disastrous results. This compassionate and understanding account fairly represents the positions of all the parties involved. The suspense of the child's precarious health, the understanding characterization of the parents and doctors, and especially the insights into Hmong culture make this a very worthwhile read.?Frances Reiher, Fairfax County Public Library, VACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This was a required textbook for my Honors English Comp class. I read it in one day. Then, I re-read it more slowly. The culture clash was one most of us have never heard of -- who has really heard of the Hmong? I know I certainly didn't. Although I *was* alive during the Vietnam war and had a father who served three tours (Navy) and I actually lived on Guam, I rarely heard of Laos. My heart broke during this book. More than once!My school had the pleasure of having Anne Fadiman speaking almost immediately after our class finished the book. As only two of us actually read it (why take an honors course if you are going to brush it off?) we were introduced to Ms. Fadiman. I told her my favorite part of the book. She beamed at me -- and in her prepared speech, read that very part! My copy is autographed! If you want a true story, one that teaches you about cultures, one that teaches you about the value of FAMILY -- read this book. I know I look at my family in a very different way after reading this book.Even if you DON'T have to read this book for an English class, read it. It will change you forever!

This book was written in 1997 and I first read it in nursing school. Although it’s been almost twenty years, “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” is just as relevant now as it was when it was written. In fact, I somehow mentioned the book to my mother in law and when I found out she hadn’t read it, I bought her a copy for Christmas. I then felt compelled to re-read the book myself, and discovered that I’ve lent out my copy. It’s been long enough that I’m guessing that I’m not getting my copy back- especially since I don’t recall who has my copy! I came to Amazon today to purchase another copy for myself. The book is just that good.Anne Fadiman’s book is really engaging and just draws the reader in. Although “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” touches on so sensitive subjects, Anne Fadiman manages to illustrate the cultural differences so starkly that I ended up feeling sympathetic to both the western medical community that was trying to treat Lia Lee as well as Lia’s family and her community. It’s written far more like a dialogue between author and reader than a narrative.I work as a nurse I often think of this book when I watch a new mom stuff cotton in her ears, put a towel over her head before going outside, reject the hospital food in favor of broth and chicken brought in by family, or politely remind me over and over “No ice in the water please!”. I honestly think this book should be required reading for doctors, nurses, social workers, foster parents, etc.

A real eyeopener to the Hmong culture, the treatment of epilepsy and the various views of medical staff and caregivers. I was drawn to this book because I have a child who has had seizures. Learning the viewpoint of another culture toward epilepsy gave me greater understanding on facing such a disability. It was unsettling to realize the different approaches to treatment and how cultural differences were/are not always recognized (to the benefit of the patient and their family). This was not an enjoyable book to read, but it was also not easy to put down. I hope that more recently cultural awarness in medical staff and caregivers has been recognized and is being put to use.

This was a required book for a psych nursing class. I quite enjoyed it overall and have read it twice now (once for class and once out of class). The author has a unique way of writing, where a couple of chapters talk about the family and then a couple chapters talk about the history of the Hmong people; I will admit about halfway through the book that started to annoy me as I wanted to know what happened with the family, so I went through and found/read the chapters on them, and then went back and found/read the history chapters. Probably not what the author or my instructor intended, but I still retained all the info and got 100% of the test questions on this book correct.Overall, this is an awesome book for understanding cultural differences in the healthcare setting and how a little bit of effort into cultural understanding and language translating could drastically change the outcome for the patient and the family. Read this please if you're going into any medical field, especially if you're going to be working in an area with diverse ethnic populations.

I'm hesitant to review this book because I know I will not do it justice. It was truly amazing; extremely interesting subject matter written about with such eloquence. I loved it!The main story is about a sick little girl, but there's so much more to it. Hmong tradition & history is expertly woven into the pages. Most stories about tribes & clans are written by ppl who go thousands of miles away & come back to America to tell the story. The Hmong came to America & the story unfolded before the eyes of many Americans, some of whom wished it hadn't. It was interesting to see how the Hmong reacted to our own customs & habits, and even more interesting to read about theirs. The girl's first seizure occurred when her sister slammed a door. According to the Hmong, the loud noise scared her soul away, so she got sick. You can also get sick if you point your finger at the full moon, pee on a rock that looks like a tiger, or wash your clothes in a lake w/ dragons.Though it was emotionally intense, it was not a ball-your-eyes-out kind of book. There were a few sad parts, a few funny parts, and even a little fantasy (their shamans rode winged horses through a staircase to the 'sky-world' to bargain for souls of the sick.) And of course, there was a heavy dose of reality; how they were treated when they came here, the best way to bridge the communication gap, welfare programs & the justice system, the concerns of her doctors & care givers. How do you explain pneumonia to ppl who don't know what lungs are!?Overall, an excellent & fascinating book.

Meditation X: Telekinesis: The Mindfulness Practice of Moving Matter with Subtle Energy and Intention, by Sean McNamara

About the Author

Growing up overseas, McNamara was exposed to a variety of spiritual traditions. Early incidents of illness and surgery brought on a persistent fear and contemplation of death and of what happens afterward. In his twenties, McNamara became a Buddhist practitioner, using meditation to investigate the nature of consciousness and reality. Because many traditions eventually become rigid and limiting out of a need for self-preservation, and do so at the cost of each individual's unique development, McNamara took a different path. He found lucid dreaming and the out-of-body experience to be especially potent methods for his spiritual inquiry, and free of the dogmatic qualities found elsewhere. He eventually applied his knowledge of meditation to telekinesis to illustrate the themes of interconnectedness and intention to his meditation students. He currently teaches meditation, lucid dreaming, the out-of-body experience, and telekinesis in Denver, Colorado, with the purpose of showing others that spiritual growth is still possible as an independent, self-empowering, and revelatory path. He is married to Cierra McNamara, who founded Mayu Sanctuary, a secular meditation center in Denver.

There are not many good books on Telekinesis and this book is one of the best. The techniques are clearly presented for the average person to learn and practice. The author presents Telekinesis as a natural ability that can be learned to show the connection between mind/body and our environment. It is also a form of subtle meditation that can improve one's concentration and inner connection to our natural vital force or chi.

I already do telekinesis, but I can say based on my own experience the techniques in here are rock solid. AND there's a couple ideas for seasoned veterans to play with. Very exciting techniques (for those of us who actually do this stuff). Thumbs up!!!

Did not like this at all...a complete waste of my time! It's just a step-by-step manual on how to perform a very small/minor type of "telekinesis". Nothing more. Already knew all of this...I was expecting much more than this VERY BASIC BOOK.

OKAY ?

There is no shortage of World War 2 historical fiction on the market, however there are a few things that make this book stand out among the others. First, some of the story takes place in Yugoslavia which isn't a setting that is normally featured in this genre. The other thing that makes this story a bit unusual is the main character is a patient in an insane asylum a few years after the war. Looking for something different is what made made me choose this book for my free Amazon First Reads pick of the month. The year is 1947 and Maud is a patient in an insane asylum in England but she is struggling to figure out how she ended up there. With the help of her doctor she slowly regains her memory and remembers her time during the war as a secret agent working in Yugoslavia. How is it all connected? The main issue I had with this book is for about 3/4 of the story I just did not feel a connection with the main character which is weird because you would think the combination of someone in dangerous situations because of the war and being in an insane asylum would get me to feel something. But the writing just left me with this empty feeling, as if something was missing. Thankfully, things start to come together by the last part of the book. I just wish it hadn't taken so long to get to that point. There were a few instances in which I thought the author waited too long to explain something or glossed over completely. To be honest, I think the premise of the book was unique but the execution wasn't the best. If I'm comparing it to other World War 2 historical fiction, it's not the most compelling. However, if you are looking for something a ittle bit different especially one that gives you a bit of a history lesson on what was going on in Yugoslavia during that time period, this is a decent pick.

40 years in mental facilities. “The Lines We Leave Behind” is a disturbing book. The heroine is a young woman who is manipulated, not only while serving as an agent in the war, but even more so after the war, by her handler that was to become her husband. This relationship is so invasive and so toxic that it has vines weaving thru every facet of this historical novel.Eliza Graham has loosely based the book on a real character. Not many Jewish women were used as spies or as highly trained operatives. This premise was quite interesting as was this part of the story. The book was difficult to get into, however. Bouncing back and forth between current and past was clunky at best. It took me 3-4 chapters to get used to the authors rhythm and begin to understand something about the characters. It was far longer to really gain any sympathy for the main character; a flaw as far as I’m concerned. The entire book would have been greatly improved by better character development. The prose and dialogue were average until the last 18% of the story. The ending of this book has real heart and had me engaged fully. It also had me waffling on 3 or 4 stars🧐. The characters come alive, the dialogue has heart and emotion and the author finally gets you feeling things for the heroine. Too bad it took so long...There is a minimal amount of profanity, non-gratuitous violence and some sexual content that is not graphic or out of context with this storyline. For lovers of historical fiction, this is a worthy read; for those seeking literary prowess, move along.

I began this book enthusiastically, intrigued by the concept. The beginning hooked me. But then it dragged. And dragged. I lost all interest halfway through, wishing we could get to the point. The narrative switches back and forth and back and forth, which is tiring and eventually aggravating. After the interminable middle, the book finally draws together the various plotlines and threads in an unsatifsying muddle, which was quite a let-down. The author has obviously done good research, and skillfully wove background information into the narrative in an unobtrusive and natural manner. But the story structure was so problematic (back and forth in time repeatedly), the book was ruined for me. Other readers may appreciate the long historical threads woven through the story, but for me, it was just too much plodding and slogging to get through the middle of the book, and too much let down in the last quarter to appreciate. I wished the author had chosen to focus on the major plot lines rather than drag the reader through so much scattered history, trying to tie the ends together. The result is a diluted mess, that is more surface puddle of scattered subjects than concentrated torrent of focused emotion. It just didn't work for me and ended in disappointment.

This story totally captivated me from start to finish. The author managed to have me see it happen from the perspective of the young woman who is totally confused about what has happened to her and whether or not she is sane. At the same time I had no problem following along with the story, because it was very clearly told. The author switched from first person telling to third person in what I felt was very effective in moving the focus from the woman being in the institution to the time that she was recalling in the past. The movement in time often happened quickly, but I always knew where the story was. This is not an easy story in that it deals with the hard times in a war zone. There is some insight into the very complex history of former Yugoslavia. It is not a book for everyone, but I did feel that the material was covered sensitively while still giving a sense of the trauma endured by all involved in such a struggle. The story itself was what kept me interested, not just the desire to know what actually happened. I found the characters, their values, and their decisions to be very good reading.

This historical novel about a woman trained to work behind the lines in World War II is written with great vividness. It evokes the pain, the times, and the places which the main character, Maud/Amber, undergoes during and after the events with a sort of elegant layered moodiness. I was drawn into the plot right away. If you like reading about this time period and like intricate plots, try this book.
