Classic John McPhee, never was particularly interested in Alaska but after reading Annals of a Former World, I knew anything by the author was intriguing. And I was right. He has an amazing talent of viewing all facets of a tale and equally representing them. He occasionally inserts his own thoughts but not in the modern manner of instructing the reader in what to think, but rather how one's view can change as horizons broaden. McPhee truly has a razor wit and will reference anecdotes from chapters before in desert dry one liners. Some may find the author verbose yet I feel if you approach his work as a savory delight rather than a quick snack, you will discover an amazing breadth of description that satisfies the imagination and truly brings another world to life.

Astonishingly detailed account of life in the nether regions of Alaska. The people and their lives on the periphery of settlements and of survival. I can't say that the author is melodic or wry or engaging ... more like someone who has been to the edge of endurance and is recounting how he got through day after day. In other words it borders on tedious , but it is a fascinating tedium and well worth the read.

Not about tectonics as I thought. My mistake. Detailed living in the wilderness so that I know I would NEVER want to do it. Wonderful enthralling read. Need a map with it. Book in great condition, and for once I didn't have to keep my dictionary next to me as I do with most McPhee. Fascinating writer.

First and third sections good, with some deeply affecting scenes and characters. The middle part about Alaskan politics is less interesting and poorly focused. Would be great to have a new edition, now that the North Slope, NPR and ANWR are under assault.

Interesting interviews with Alaskans who have moved north and settled in a small remote city called Eagle. I have always thought Alaska was for those who can't get along in the lower 48. John McPhee confirms that notion with his travels and descriptions of some really weird people in Alaska. Not really what I had expected, but good. I like the book Alaska by Mitchner much more since it was a broader more general picture of the settlement of Alaska.

McPhee presents many sides of the now fading American frontier in Alaska. I found the section about the tugs of war between cities for the honor of being the Capital too long, and I found myself skimming big sections. The second half tells the stories of many Alaskan characters in the remote town of Eagle, and the details of these lives paint a fascinating mural of life in the Northern wilds.

The only reason this book doesn't rate five stars is because the middle section, "What They Were Hunting For" (about the search for a new state capital) is a bit dated and can't really measure up to the rest of the book. But the first section, "The Encircled River" is an amazing piece of prose. This book was written 30 years ago, and when I re-read "The Encircled River", I feel like I've been given the gift of seeing with my own eyes, what was then one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world. The final section, "Coming into the Country", is absolutely fascinating, a story of people who have sought out and continue to search for a life that few Americans could even begin to imagine.McPhee is one of the great writers of our time. He can take topics that I might otherwise find dull, and transform them into page-turners. When given the subject of Alaska, he does better than that.

John McPhee is the greatest outdoor writer since Hemingway! This book is the real story of Alaska and her people, country, adventure, and written with McPhee's style, feelings and personal experience. Haven lived in both a red and purple state, I know what it is to be ignored and bombarded at election time so I think it would be awesome for something like this to be implemented.Also, this booklet is a quick read (not much legal mumbo jumbo).

I should have payed attention to the running time as this is VERY abbreviated! I thought the voices were kind of "cartoonish" and it seemed geared more for children. I'll stick with the unabridged novel.

We have this in CD's, but my new car doesn't have a CD player so we downloaded this! This is the best version available - music, different actors, great vocabulary! My sons have been listening to this since my youngest was 4 and is now 21! He used to quote it in kindergarten! The fact that they still enjoy it is testament that it is a great book and version!

I personally like this audio version of the book. It is much better that the BBC audio, which has a lot of distracting background music. These audio versions have been perfect for my 10 year old, who loves the story, is very intelligent, but has some reading difficulties. But... I am glad I did not just jump in and purchase this. I was an Audible customer for years, and they provide a wonderful service for those who can afford to buy the audio downloads. If I were getting an audio version to listen to myself, I would be going to my local library that has a copy with Rob Inglis reading the book. He is simply the best. As I pointed out earlier though, this is for my 10 year old who does seem to follow along better with a cast of charterers reading the parts. So I was able to get for free, the download threw my local library on Neibors. Now he has the chance to listen to the story, I didn't have to pay for a thing, and my library is justified in providing this service to its patrons. Win, Win!!!

This is an excellent version of the Hobbit and my children, five and six year old boys, love it. It is their favorite audiobook and they listen to it all the time. The voices are very well done and it is an engaging introduction to Middle Earth. I highly recommend it, especially for children or for someone who is new to Tolkien's world.

This is an entertaining version of the Hobbit. They have been able to prune the story down to a reasonable 4h 13 minutes (much shorter than the 3 movies or the 11 hour unabridged version). Plus you get an ensemble cast that breath life into the various characters. Lacking a lot of Tolkien's descriptive text, the story moves along. The actors do a great job portraying the various characters from Gandalf and Bilbo to Thorin and Golem. In addition, the use of sound effects and music turn a narrative story into a dramatic radio play. The one complaint I have is that the levels are too variable for spoken text. I mainly listed in our car, and frequently had to turn up the volume to hear what people were saying and then had to crank it back down when fighting or actions threatened my ear drums.This is a great, and relatively fast, way to introduce someone to the initial book in Tolkien's Middle Earth saga.

Having collected all of the original Hildebrandt brothers' Middle Earth Calendars, and stored them away in a closet after years on my bookshelves, I had to see how the best of their work would look in a single, full color book. I was not disappointed! This book has all the best of their paintings from the calendars, and some pictures that I had never seen. It's a Tolkien Fan's treasure house of great moments in the Lord of the Rings. And it's a reasonable size to keep on a coffee table or in a bookshelf. I opted for the coffee table. It's gorgeous!

It's an artwork book, not a story, so the questions that Amazon asks for their review really doesn't apply in this situation. But still very happy with this book.

Amazing collection of artwork that visually captures Tolkien's epic,Lord of the Rings. Beautiful paintings, filled with grace, action,dread and magic. A must for anyone into the Hildebrandt Brothers orTolkien. You definitely won't see a visual representation like thisanywhere else, except maybe the movies themselves.

I bought this book for the art and for the sentimentality of my youth, but I was very pleasantly surprised at the depth and skill of the author. I expected to flip through it looking at the art, but I've actually read the whole book from cover to cover. Well done!

Everything was all alright and ok with the book. I was Just like described, I really really loved it. :)

As any Brothers Hildebrandt fan knows, Greg and Tim's first Tolkein calender went on to become a worldwide bestseller. Some of the art,such as Unexpected Party or Gandalf with the Balrog was simply brilliant. Some of it looks dated today such as the hideous 1976 granny dress that Galadriel wears or the Sgt. Pepper mustache on Aragorn and the silly looking Fell beasts ridden by Nazgul who look like they're about to fall off at any minute. Oh well. Nobody got out of the 70s without some style howlers. Laugh at the funny stuff and be awed by the great.One of the strongest and most charming elements of the book is the descriptions from Greg Hildebrant's son who was five when the brothers began working on the calenders. Young Greg's memories are full of wonder that's in keeper with what his uncle and father were working on. It's not all sweetness and light however, young Greg remembers that toward the middle of the project things got increasingly difficult in the studio. The pressures of the deadline, creative disagreements and artistic disappointments (Among other things the brothers didn't have time to do a huge battle scene that they'd planned) and the need to do separate projects are all mentioned.Besides all three Hildebrandt calenders, the book has pictures of privately commissioned works (some of which are better than the orginal paintings), prelim sketches, and photos of the models. If you loved the work of the brothers or have just discovered it this will be a highly entertaining treat for you.

Greg and Tim Hildebrandt's "The Tolkien Years" is a wonderful set of illustrations that go along with mostly "The Lord of the Rings" but this book does have a few illustrations from "The Hobbit." These gorgeous works of art were originally apart of calendars that the Hildebrant brothers worked on. This book will make reading "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" much more fun as you will be able to visualize things perfectly. Along with beautiful illustrations this book has a lot of text that includes quotes directly from Greg and Tim and full text entries by Greg Hildebrant, Jr. All of the artwork in this book is in full color and look just like original pieces of art. In addition to the final artowrk there are also concept drafts from "scribble" stages, to a general rough draft, all the way to the ginal, full color, and eye-catching pictures. There is also a very nice pull out poster as a special bonus. This is a book of artwork from Middle-Earth that no Tolkien fan should be without. The art in this book will be appreciated by everybody.
