Review

"In this brilliant, compassionate book, Wendy Mogel has something to offer every parent. By practicing what Mogel recommends, parents will find the dance they do with their children as they wend their way to adulthood less uncertain, less painful, and more joyful that it is now. Read it and teach yourself how to do it." —Barry Schwartz, author of Practical Wisdom and Why We Work"Wisdom for parents of children of all ages from one of the most astute psychologists on the planet. Dr. Mogel explains the art and science of communicating with the people you love most."    —Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author of Grit“In this intelligent and useful book, Wendy Mogel explains how the tenor of your remarks may make as much difference as their content.  In accessible terms, she shows how minor adjustments may help lower the inherent tension of parent-child relationships.” —Andrew Solomon, bestselling author of Far From the Tree“For all parents who have heard themselves yell when they meant to simply question, or have clammed up when they meant to be curious (and that, of course, is all of us) here’s your new bible. With her trademark deep empathy, Mogel once again is absolutely on point as she challenges parents to talk to their children compassionately, and to listen a whole lot more. How lovely to hear her sage voice in these pages.” —Madeline Levine, PhD., author of The Price of Privilege “Generous and wise…Wendy Mogel gives me the rare and comforting feeling that parenting problems actually have solutions. She delivers these not as rules from on high, but as a series of insights that credit our intelligence and bring out our best selves.” —Pamela Druckerman, author of Bringing Up Bébé

I bought this with an interest in doing less scolding and more support of my children. It does have some helpful things about distractions and focusing on your kids. If you don't have babies I would skip that chapter as it makes it seem as if all is lost if you haven't done what she says. There are a lot of gender sterotypes and not mention of children who struggle with ASD, ADHD, or learning disabilities. I keep thinking "well sure this is EASY if your child has a good working short term memory" my eldest with ADHD does not. What I found useful could be put into a pamphlet.

Love this book it really helps understand many things about parenting and how to address some situations with not only little ones but also with teenagers

Excellent tips for how to communicate with your kids at all ages.

Very helpful

As a “trustee,” in my case a private music teacher in an affluent community without my own kids, this book provides a helpful glimpse into the challenges that contemporary parents face. It also deepened my appreciation for the sublime gift it is to be in a position of trust as I watch these curious aliens grow and develop as they fulfill their unique destinies.

As a mother of a soon to be teenager and more to come I have been searching books that would help me guide my teen as well as my little's I have in my own home. This book is practical hands on lessons that even teens could use as a reference when talk to adults and their friends. I learned so much from this book on how words can effect someone from when they are growing as young child to adulthood. Just the difference between the use of a term as well as the sound of your voice can change who a child will interpret you.I am sharing this book with all the moms I know.Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Wendy Mogel Voice Lessons for Parents

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley for free in exchange for an honest review.Wendy Mogel has written an accessible and straightforward guide for parents who want to communicate more effectively with their children. The book is organized by age and then a chapter with specific suggestions for boys and another for girls. I really liked the honesty and lack of condescension in this book. As the mother of a third-grade daughter, I admit that I gave the chapters focusing on girls a much closer read than those that focused on boys.I appreciate the very specific advice in Voice Lessons for Parents and know that I will be referring to it frequently.

Reading the whole book isn't really the way most would approach this book. Since it is broken down by age and gender, it works to just read the relevant parts for the time a parent is living or about to live. In these areas, there are some very helpful suggestions and considerations hidden among some things that felt less ground-breaking.As a teacher, I was hoping to get more perspective on how teachers can also talk to students, but the dynamic of parents is so different from that of a teacher, most was not relevant to my job. I would, however, recommend that many parents (especially involved parents) read this in order to figure out how to let go somewhat for children to grow up and let go. A lot of what she had to say about the accidental pressure and interference in school and activities for teenagers really resonated with me.

R.C. Sproul expounds on these Parables in a way I found meaningful but, if you're going to watch this series I recommend you be prepared to separate the wheat from the chaff. I was with this guy all the way to around the middle of the third episode, at which time he lost my respect completely with a brazen appeal using guilt and fear tactics to openly condemn those who don't tithe to the church by strongly suggesting they have very little chance of salvation if they don't, with great intensity. If he thinks he's a Shepherd he might be confused about his job. I'm not sure the more successful Shepherds use guilt and condemnation to guide their flocks to greener pastures. It doesn't seem like it would be effective to that end. I get the strong impression he thinks that people should trust him and others to use their money to do God's work rather than trusting God to guide each individual to dedicate a portion of their own money specifically doing it themselves. Maybe he just thinks we're all just too stupid to trust our in own relationships with God to guide us in doing the right thing... Jesus railed relentlessly against organized religion during his lifetime (this being one of the main reasons: the whole money is the root af all evil-money is power: power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely type thing). I wonder what Jesus would have said to him, and the others for not having spoken up themselves, if he had been sitting in this audience? TO BE CLEAR: I do think he explained the Parables he spoke of very well but, since that telling moment, I doubt he truly applies many of the things he SAYS so well. I'm still going to watch the rest of the series. This is just a warning I felt compelled to post in reference to this disturbing moment that led me to strongly question his personal intent. Great stuff other than that... The old adage "love the sinner:hate the sin is coming in pretty handy for me right now. If you choose to watch: good luck, and God bless. If you don't: good luck and God bless.

I use these as a study and teaching guide. R C Sproul is very through. His descriptions are complete, and easy to understand. I certainly recommend these tapes to students of the scriptures, as well as those wanting a better understanding of the parables.

anything rc sproul teaches is on point. no doubt God works through him.

Wonderful teaching!
