About the Author

Marianne Du Toit is a South African woman who has been living in Ireland since 1996. Following graduation in 1992 with a BA degree, majoring in political science and psychology from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, Marianne travelled and worked extensively throughout Europe for three years. In 1995, she single-handedly planned and embarked on a three month cycling tour of Europe. In 2002 The TATA (Travels across the Americas) Challenge was conceived. It was an epic journey, which involved Marianne travelling solo with two horses from Argentina to New York over a 21 month period. Crying with Cockroaches, an account of this extraordinary adventure is her first book. As the idea for her adventure evolved, Marianne realised that it could also help others and chose to use it to highlight the lack of therapeutic riding facilities in Ireland. She is currently a director of Pegasus, a therapeutic riding centre in Sligo. Marianne campaigns for animal rights by supporting the DSPCA and other welfare organisations. She is particularly interested in drawing attention to the cruelty involved in the production of foie gras where ducks and geese are force-fed (by the insertion of metal pipes in their throats) over a twenty one day period. She also supports the movement to ban fur farming in Ireland and seal hunting in Canada.

Having been personally impacted by Marianne Du Toit on her journey, I read her book with great interest to gain day-to-day detail of her two-year adventure. She and her two horses stayed with my family for a couple of days in North Carolina while she wrote, replaced a broken saddle, and tended to her horse's needs before making the final push towards her goal of reaching New York City after an almost two-year journey alone on horseback. What a remarkable woman to have struck out on her own, without much planning, being open to what humanity and nature gave her in experience. It is a book about forging ahead into the unknown, with open heart and mind to learn of life. For Marianne it was an exploration of self. Her nature was not to succumb to fear; but rather, look outward to the people she met along the way with trust and respect. Her writing illustrates how she coped daily with the traversing strange landscape in all weather, finding food and shelter, in Spanish-speaking countries where she did not know the language.I felt grateful to have met Marianne and read her story of the human experience. To have traveled with 2 horses as her only companions further complicated the experience because she was not only absorbed with her response to survival; but also, what was needed to care for her horses. She has a real empathy for the animals that traveled with her and formed a bond with mutual respect.Oh, that we could all make a similar journey in life. Marianne shows that it is possible. She is an inspiration for anyone who has a dream, or simply wants to be a good human.

Fascinating tale of a woman who not only travels alone in Latin America and the U.S. but has two horses as travel companions. I enjoyed reading about her adventures, fears, triumphs, and descriptions of the countries and people who helped her along the way.

This woman went on an amazing adventure and she should always be commended for that. I've been planning a long-distance trek by horse for a long time and bought this looking for pointers and inside info, which there is. Du Toit unabashedly mentions the "nuts and bolts" of planning this and then doing it. How'd she pay for it? Credit cards mostly, how she found the two animals she used and how to get them through inaccessible areas (like across the Amazon River).BUT, although she completed an awe-inspiring trek, the writing isn't brilliant. Lots of abrupt paragraph endings and clunky sentences makes it read like a sketchy abbreviated journal. Just wish she had hired someone to edit and clean it up a bit for her, it would have flowed better. The descriptions she gives of the Plano in Bolivia, her run-ins with isolated villagers who occasionally weren't friendly, numerous randy drunks and friendly border cops are all apt. You do feel like you are actually there.

At the point this review was submitted (September 2008) all prior reviews were 5 out of 5. Now in all fairness to Marianne, Tolstoy, Austen, Euripides et. al. I will take the dastardly step of submitting a score more reflective of this book's place in the pantheon of world literature rather than a tribute to an amazing woman. Then again, that being the case I might be considered too cerebral and not connected emotionally to the adventure that Marianne experienced. But I truly enjoyed the book and read it from cover to cover. Thus, I arrived at my score of 4 out of 5 for the pure entertainment value of her book plus the bonus credit of providing a meaningful cultural and historic cross reference to the classic by Aimé Tschiffely.A close read of the two books provides the reader with an opportunity to compare and contrast the world of the past with that of the present. But it's more interesting than a simple fact check analysis. What one finds is that the lives of the people involved are surprisingly constant over time. Generations pass and there remain invariable struggles and regional quirks that surprise the reader for not just their strangeness but also for the constancy and so often the sadness of their lives. Tschiffely spared none with his pithy and by today's standards politically incorrect assessments of the people and the lives he mixed with in his travels. His adventures simply cannot be replicated since the times are so different, yet in some ways there are remarkable similarities. One can clearly discern his preferences for the various residents of South America. Marianne notes that an Argentine acquaintance remarked that should she ever come across a humble Argentine or a smiling Bolivian she should immediately call and report back. For those who have travelled to these places the remark is easily understood and it demonstrates the degree to which she was able to access the humor and insight of the locals in her travels. Throughout her trip it is this type of one on one interaction that creates the greatest impact on the reader. Certainly the sights, smells and sounds along the way are memorable, but these can only be adequately captured in person or by the greatest of writers. She never seeks to do that and rightly so. Rather she seeks to explore the people. Tschiffely also had an interest in the people he met, but his interest was more analytical than emotional. In some ways his book tends to be more humorous for this very reason; and certainly he wrote to entertain. Tschiffely who like Marianne carried firearms (though he had much more than her small handgun) also delved into aspects that don't appear in her book. His excursions to the opium dens of Peru were especially memorable and throughout his story we can clearly perceive an interest if not attraction to the more beautiful women he encountered. Both Marianne and Tschiffely spent years away from home on their travels and it's likely that loneliness might lead to the need for more intimate human contact. The times and discretion may have caused him to exclude the details of his possible romantic encounters with women on his route. Today we live in a much more expressive time; nevertheless, Marianne seems to noticeably exclude any mention of romance from her travelogue. Certainly, this might have made the story more interesting, if only to address how she dealt with or combated these desires over the years on the road.Comparisons of the two could be made on so many issues. Certainly Tschiffely was a horseman who understood his animals, the land the languages and people he encountered (at least for the most part). Marianne's boldness exceeded her abilities in so many areas. A complete lack of language skill, negligible equestrian competency, and general lack of preparedness did not bode well for her trip. Had she failed and perished she might be remembered as a bookend to Christopher McCandless who although on a different quest, entered the wilds equally unprepared. A huge difference was that Marianne was interested in engaging the world and the people in it rather than running from it. This is real adventure travel, not reality TV. There's no backup crew following her and providing assistance just when life looks to be getting the best of her. This is all-in poker and it's simply beyond what 99.9999% of society will willingly take on themselves. You'll undoubtedly enjoy her story and you might wish that she had better prepared since that would have made it different. I don't say better because the experience is relative to one's own life and expectations. But in the end she entertains us and appears to better understand herself. Congratulations to her, my only concern now is what are her days like without the adventure. Is it sad?

Wherever you are on earth, it's only a matter of time before you come across children playing soccer. Another five minutes and you will probably find yourself having a ball rolled to your feet as an invitation to join in the game. Soccer is a common language and a culture shared: a joy, a passion, an escape, and an affirmation of identity understood and celebrated by children—and their parents—in every country around the globe. For this unique collaborative project, soccer writer Tom Watt talked to the world's top players about growing up and falling in love with the game: Argentina's Lionel Messi and Brazil's Gilberto Silva; England's David James and Scotland's Craig Gordon; Italy's Fabio Cannavaro, Spain's Iker Casillas, and France's Franck Ribéry; South Africa's Benni McCarthy and Nigeria's Nwankwo Kanu; USA's Landon Donovan and Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura; and the world's most famous player, David Beckham.A Beautiful Game tells their stories, in the players' own words—stories of boys who would grow up to be heroes for a new generation of young players and fans. They look back to their childhoods: to their family homes, to their schoolrooms, to the friends they grew up with, and to the places where they first played the game that has made them stars. The players' words are brought to life with over 160 full-color images that offer rare, emotive, and striking insights into childhood all over the world, and celebrate soccer's ability to touch the lives of children—and adults—wherever the beautiful game is played.Five percent of the originating publisher's revenue from sales of the book worldwide will benefit selected UNICEF sports-related projects.

A moving read even if you aren't a fan of soccer. This book is about people who have an intense passion for something and follow it - no matter the struggle. It also shows how different soccer players got to where they are in very different ways. Some arrive on the world stage by playing 3 v 3 with their friends on the street with a makeshift ball while others have technical coaches from the age of 3. This book shows the beauty of soccer and how it can bring all backgrounds together for the love of a game. For those aspiring soccer players, it will inspire them by seeing the passion these guys have and reading the wisdoms they acquired to become the best. This is a great read for those who love true stories of the indomitable human spirt and those who love soccer. I wish there was another book to follow this one with some of the newer players arriving on the scene.

My life long friend over the past 70 years grew up in England and played and coached soccer for most of his life. What could I give him for Christmas that he would actually acknowledge and even read for pleasure. This book was a real winner. It proudly sits on his coffee table and he won't shut-up about its contents. I don't like soccer and I love silence. But in the long run, I pleased my friend. It's all worth it.

For a budding soccer high school player .... He said he heard of this book, but thought you couldn't get. His mother (also a soccer player) was as happy to receive this into their home!

When I purchased this book I was a little surprised by its physical size as it is very large. That being said, I think this book is a great representation of the beauty of soccer, the way that it is written where the players tell about how they fell in love with the game is really interesting especially because some great players are featured. This book more or less changed the way I address the game whenever I am able to play where now I try to smile as often as possible while playing and remember the game for what I loved when I was younger growing up.

I bought this as a gift for one of my nephews who loves the sport. I come from a "die-hard soccer family" - 3 generations strong; coaching, refereeing and playing, This is the perfect book for all soccer fans who are interested in the history and techniques of soccer, whether a coach, referee, player, or armchair warrior.. "A Beautiful Game..." is being enjoyed by my nephew and entire family.

The pictures and the stories in this beautful coffee table book are fantastic! I purchased this for my daughter, who is a soccer player and a huge fan of the sport. I found myself reading it when she wasn't. Great gift for the soccer player in your life!

We bought this book for christmas 2011. I have 4 sons between 9-13 who have almost memorized the book. short bios on players from humble backgrounds are not only inspiring, but a geography lesson as well. The big format makes the book easily approachable, and you find yourself wanting to read "just one more". The book puts a human face on professional soccer, and helps focus on the journey more than the success. Highly recommended for young and old alike.

I bought this book as a gift for my boyfriend's dad. Although I haven't given it to him yet, I know he's going to love it! It has interviews from lots of players all over the world and lots of color pictures! Great deal for a soccer lover!
