About the Author

Raised in Berkeley, California, Michael Stokes is now a Los Angeles-based photographer. He graduated first in his class and Phi Beta Kappa with a Fine Art degree through the film department at California State University, Long Beach. Before changing his career path to filmmaking, he was a photography major, learning pre-digital photographic techniques and using darkrooms and silver gelatin film. In film school, he wrote and directed a short film, Alien, that screened in film festivals around the world. Michael's first coffee table book, Masculinity (2012), was a glamour-styled, photographic male figure study book that is currently out of print. In the same style as his first, his second book, Bare Strength (2014), is already in its third printing and is available on Amazon. It features a chapter on wounded veterans of war, specifically amputees. From the sales of this book, he has donated $10,000 to the Semper Fi Fund, a charity that benefits veterans of war and their families. Also in 2014, Michael collaborated with the publisher Taschen to produce My Buddy, supplying the publisher with his collection of vintage photos of nude WWII soldiers. Michael's third and fourth books, Exhibition and Always Loyal release November 1, 2015. Exhibition continues the exploration and celebration of the male figure, while Always Loyal is dedicated exclusively to wounded United States veterans. Before the end of 2015, from pre-sales of both books, Michael will donate $20,000 to the Semper Fi Fund. Michael's photos of wounded veterans have been shared around the world and have been featured on television: Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Tonight Show, The View, and The Talk. They have been featured in several major newspapers and online periodicals around the world.

Michael Stokes is an amazing photographer of male nudes. Each model, whether fully exposed or not, is sensuous and masculine. These men have balls and Stokes captures everything so deliciously.

I love the book but the binding is coming apart a little bit. The book itself deserves the 5 star rating though so I am not going to take that away just because of the binding.

Amazing. Michael Stokes is incredible. The book has a fantastic layout and the photos are vibrant and amazing.

I received this book today only to find out that the lettering in some pages washed off like if the printer ran out of ink. The entire book seems like if it was printed at a regular printing machine, i disregarded that detail, just to find out later that page 586 fell out of the book like if it was never attached to it, or glued to it, and i just opened this book for the first time because i received it today! I'm going to return this printed copy of the book and get the hardcover version.

WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.

This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication.If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. If you work in the nursery or landscape industry and seriously love plants, this can be one of your best friends.

While I usually classify Dr. Dirr's books as additions to the basic gardening library, I have to include this one in the basic book section--one you should have. Most all of us have woody landscape plants and among us the knowledge of how to care for them is mixed. Having been associated with the Master Gardener Volunteer program in three states, I find this book to contain the answers to many relevant questions that presented to the call in volunteers.

excellent reference book. Just keep in mind that Dr. Dirr is coming from a Georgia climate perspective so keep that in mind. The book has all the most common woody landscaping plants.

The book is fantastic...it is extensive, very detailed and precise, the drawings are accurate and lovely. All in all, I'm very pleased with the book and am certain it will be very useful among my reference books.The bad things was that about the last fourth of the pages had a severe crease in them that made it hard to use for a long time. I put it under a large stack of books and used it from that weighted stack with much effort. It has straightened out a great deal, but is still not perfect. I needed it immediately or I would have refused to accept it, and returned it.

This was a "recommended" book for a horticulture class. I'm so glad I bought it. The information is presented in a friendly style, like you're sitting down for a cup of coffee with the author and he's telling you about the interesting plants he has seen and grown. Details of various cultivars make this a valuable reference that I'm sure I'll use frequently.

At first glance this book does not look like much next to the stack of glossy, color gardening books. Spend a half-hour with it and it's value becomes apparent. No photos but that doesn't hurt this book's usefulness at all. The drawings in this book are extremely helpful. I have an "Elm thing" that a relative was positive was an American Elm. I had my doubts since I think it was planted by bird droppings. I opened up the manual and looked at those line drawings and saw the new buds on Siberian Elm are spherical and the ones on American are pointed. The buds on my tree are round. A positive ID.Information on how plants do in California is rather sketchy but there are tidbits in this book you won't find anywhere else.This is no dry treatise: When Dirr gets on the subject of a plant he hates, it makes entertaining reading. Some of his commentary is thought provoking as well.I bought the hardcover. Someone mentioned the thin pages. At 1200 or so pages they need to be to save your back. The cover looks like it can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the binding is sewn, not glued. With reasonable care this book will last a long time.Should be on every gardener's shelf.

I'd had a LinkedIn account for a long time, but I never used it. This winter, I decided to develop my account. Visual Quick Start books are usually concise and full of information, and the books work as a reference once you're up and running. This book was disappointing. There was very little technical information. The book focused on features of LinkedIn in a very general way. My free version of LinkedIn is fully developed. I have received some very interesting job postings for full time work, although I am interested in part time.Also, this is the first time I've purchased a digital version of a reference book. I don't recommend doing that. It's much easier to flip through a reference while working on a screen.

For someone who's new to LinkedIn, this would be a really good book. It covers all the ins and outs of the site and gives some really good tips on maximizing your personal profile and best practices for networking through LinkedIn. I definitely picked up a few nuggets. It also covered some lesser-known aspects (at least to me) of LinkedIn like the suggestions in the last chapter, "Miscellaneous Uses for LinkedIn."However, the primary reason I bought the book was to learn how to best manage a COMPANY profile (rather than an individual profile) on LinkedIn. This book was woefully lacking on that subject. In fact, it was never mentioned.Overall, it was a good book, it just didn't address the one thing I was specifically looking for.

LinkedIn is fascinating but,not easy for me to navigate or figure out. I have read SO much about how this site is booming and helping others build their businesses and I wanted to accomplish the same thing.I own a company of my own but,I had not given much thought to using LinkedIn to help me do it until I read about this website. I blundered through signing up for it but,without a lot of direction. This book is slowly helping me understand the ins and outs of this site in a step by step manner.

He sequences the lessons the way they should be: top-down as theory is known today rather than in the chronological sequence of inventions.So, we are spared the needless horde of particles before their eventual classification or journeys into the much talked about 1900-1950 era quantum mechanics or relativity theories. The author starts with fermions and bosons the way school books start with the constituents of atoms. He works downwards into sub-classifications but only to the extent needed. Even as he talks about quantum chromodynamics and super-symmetries, he is able to touch upon just the right level of details for ordinary readers.The lecture series uses multitudes of common life examples to make the intricate concepts easier to grasp. There is a good combination of theoretical and experimental science - another positive. By far the biggest negative is that the lecture series is too short for such a vast topic. As a result, one always feels a bit hurried and many subjects are covered way too partially.

I like how he leads up to the Higgs field but it is not, I say, not for the average Joe. A book format might better suite most laymen rather than the audio format.

The sad and sorry case of Eric Garner (and his staunchest advocate, his recently deceased daughter, Erica) perfectly illustrates the problems faced by those on the receiving end of the judicial cudgel. This book is a perfect complement to Radley Balko's superbly researched and compellingly presented, "Rise of the Warrior Cop".By now, most Americans are (or should be) aware of rapid erosion of civil liberties, most prominent amongst them, functional elimination of the Fourth Amendment by the legislative, judicial and enforcement arms of government. Much of this activity is relatively out of sight, but police brutality has garnered (pun intended) flashes of public interest. Presence of thugs in The Thin Blue Line are hardly a new issue: the "Third Degree" administered in smokey back rooms by tough cops has been a feature of Hollywood films and hundreds of police procedural and mystery stories for decades. Police back alley "street justice" is a hallowed American tradition.The new dimension focused on in "I Can't Breathe" is the arrival of digital video, an objective and readily available instrument for publicizing brutality and other depredations visited on the citizenry by law enforcement. These range from routine humiliation ("Stop and Frisk") to beatings and outright murder. While not the first video documenting such outrages, the Eric Garner killing was a catalyst, focusing (albeit briefly) public attention on the problem. Garner's death was followed in rapid succession by a series of additional police murders. Public and legislative attempts to curb judicial malfeasance have, so far, come to naught.As is oftentimes the case, Eric Garner wasn't an exemplary and upstanding member of the community. In other words, he had an extensive arrest record and a distinguished (mostly by ineptitude) series of other run-ins with The Man. Eventually, the relentless harassment Garner sustained boiled over, as best encapsulated by Popeye the Sailor's immortal statement, "I've had all's I can stand and I can't stand no more!" While Popeye could solve the problem by popping a can of spinach, Garner's resistance culminated in death by asphyxiation, administered by a New York cop using a banned choke-hold. Whatever Garner's past and regardless of the trivial nature of his infraction (selling untaxed cigarettes), the Garner death was murder, pure and simple. While one would hope that Garner's death wasn't for naught, it was: the cop went free, policies did not change, life goes on.Taibbi does an expert job of contextualizing the Garner case. He deftly integrates the particulars of the Garner story with the insurmountable problems the citizenry faces in attempting to achieve justice, however defined. From the perspective of the judicial machine, justice equates to blood money: the system grinds on, the police perpetrator goes free and the taxpayer foots the bill for a payout to the aggrieved survivors. Case closed. The byzantine maze that must somehow be negotiated before reaching that endpoint is a focus of Taibbi's book. It was designed to frustrate, delay, baffle and intimidate and it succeeds wonderfully in so doing.The author contextualizes the war on the "black underclass" (swiftly expanding to include all of us) by sympathetically detailing the travails of the Garner clan. To be sure, there’s plenty of social dysfunction and – as always – it’s hard to disentangle elements of personal responsibility from the twisted socio-economic-racial milieu. Perhaps Taibbi’s portrayal of Garner is overly sympathetic and his reliance on some of the same characterizations of Garner’s stature (he was fat and tall) used to devious effect by the fuzz and associated media outlets.As already noted, this book meshes nicely with the more comprehensive and fact-laden exposition of police militarization written by Radley Balko. The outcome of that (now entrenched) transformation of law enforcement from “the cops on the beat” to “the robo-cops that beat” and kills isn’t too surprising. Maybe the appropriate coda for Taibbi’s and Balko’s books can be found in Gabriel Garcia Márquez’s aphorism, “Wisdom comes to us when it can no longer do any good.” In other words, by the time the public figures out that police adversarial attitudes with respect to “civilians” isn’t a good thing, it will be too late to fix the rancid mess.

Couldn’t put it down. It’s about time, SOME people put down their rose colored glasses and stop believing that all police officers are perfect people. They aren’t. They make mistakes and they are just like the rest of us. I don’t believe that they are all monsters but they are far from saints. As a person of color, these things happen. They get it wrong, and when the police gets it wrong, people die. People lose their freedom for a long period of time. Innocent people are sent to the gas chamber or lethal injection. It’s serious business.This is a story that most Black people can tell you. This is a story that most Black people will tell you. What sucks is that you have to hear it from a face that resembles you more for it to be more believable. Well if it takes Taibbi to tell the truth, then so be it.

This video makes for troubling viewing and shows two police officers, biding their time, feigning disinterest, as Garner, ranting, says he is being harassed. Then, one officer suddenly pounces, applies a chokehold from behind, and rides Garner, a big man, to the ground while a horde of cops pile on. “I can’t breathe…,” the panicked Garner says (11 times according to Wikipedia) until he is limp and still, his face planted on the sidewalk.IMHO, the book jacket of I CAN’T BREATHE, the latest work from the estimable Matt Taibbi, captures this deplorable incident with both force and subtlety. This jacket, the creation of Greg Mollica, presents a column of 11 gradually fading entreaties—I CAN’T BREATHE—that eventually plinth on this book’s subtitle, which is: “A Killing on Bay Street”. A killing, it certainly was.In I CAN’T BREATHE, Taibbi is determined to create a sympathetic portrait of Eric Garner, who—dead at 43—had a complex family life, many friends, and made his living selling bootleg cigarettes—mostly loosies—to commuters and street people on Staten Island. Even so, I’d say Matt’s primary subjects are:o The transformation of policing. Starting in the 1970s, urban police departments began to reformulate their mission. Instead of reacting to crime and enforcing the law, the police shifted to aggressive in-your-face tactics to maintain so-called public order, which is a nebulous and flexible concept that the police can twist to justify almost any arrest. Eventually, these tactics, known as Zero Tolerance or Broken Windows policing, reached their nadir in New York City, where the notorious Stop-and Frisk program produced 680,000 stops in 2011. Stop-and-Frisk was data-driven and imposed unstated quotas—so many stops, arrests, and summons each month—on police officers. And the hapless Garner was frequently swept into its maw.o NYPD acquiescence to police brutality. Before Garner’s death, NYC’s Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) did a study of chokehold complaints in the period between 2009 and 2014. The report found: 1) 1,082 complaints alleging 1,128 chokeholds by NYPD officers. (2) The CCRB fully investigated only 520 of these complaints; and 3) of these, the CCRB substantiated just 10. Observes Taibbi: “In nine of these ten cases, the CCRB recommended the strongest possible punishment. But in all nine of those cases, the cop in question ended up getting off with either no punishment at all or a maximum of five vacation days lost… Essentially, out of more than one thousand chokehold complaints, roughly 99 percent of the cases simply disappeared. In five years, the department had never once really punished an officer for a chokehold. “o The imperfect self-regulation of the NYPD. Writes Taibbi: “Only about 5 percent of [all New York] police received eight or more complaints. Pantaleo [the cop who choked Garner] had fourteen. And only about 2 percent had as many as two substantiated complaints, while Pantaleo had four… it was certainly clear now [after this cop’s personnel file surfaced] that between Pantaleo’s CCRB file and his multiple lawsuits for strip-searching…, the NYPD had ample evidence before the Garner incident that he was a problem cop.o Injustice in the legal system. Observes Taibbi: “In police brutality cases, the bad guy is always the individual, not the system behind him… But before the bodies even cool, the crime moves up the chain… family members find themselves facing a series of intractable bureaucracies designed to make cases against police officers vanish in blizzards of political excuses and unintelligible legalese. These bureaucracies are designed to frustrate and exhaust families bent on getting justice, grinding them down… a war of attrition.” In this system, according to Taibbi, the police almost never go to jail. As a result, the best-case for police-brutality victims and their families in NYC is not Justice, which is unachievable, but to get the city to cut a big check. And here, the media leverage exerted by Al Sharpton often plays a conspicuous role.Matt gets the final word: “Garner’s real crime was being a conspicuous black man of slovenly appearance who just happened to spend his days standing on the street across from a string of new high-end condominium complexes… His raw presence threatened property values. Plus, he was an easy bust, and so became a regular target of police mandated to make busts like clockwork.”Highly recommended.

I've liked pretty much everything Matt Taibbi has written, but this one was/is one of his best. Full disclosure, I am a criminology professor, and this is is a little denser than some of Matt's other works, but he does a brilliant job of showing how a social structure/institution, one that we have given so much power to in our laws, how they can impact us as individuals, in this case tragically for one person- Eric Garner. It is heartbreaking, but also eye opening. It is too easy to view these incidents in isolation. I did. I looked at the officers, what could have been done differently, and was horrified. What I should have done, and what Taibbi did, was take a step back and look at the system, and not just look at the system and how it failed, but look at what happened with that system over time and what led up to that moment.
