Not as much info on 15th/16th century as I'd like. But I can use some earlier pieces for inspiration for my historical reenacting.

It's rather more interested in post-Renaissance jewelry than anything else, devoting quite a bit of its pages to the super ornate stuff. There's a perfectly good reason for this, namely that pre-Renaissance jewelry frequently got melted down and recast. I still wish it'd devoted more time to that earlier stuff, since my interest is particularly in Renaissance-era jewelry. Still, it's a great introduction to the subject.Well-written, with lots of good tidbits, and one of the few resources for the study of the history of jewelry. Lavish illustrations and portraits, some of which I'd never seen anywhere else before.

It is a good resource book, gives a lot of details on the actual HISTORY of jewellery. But relying almost solely on text when writing of something as visual as jewellery is somewhat dry. For an (antique) jewellery aficionado, not so much interested in knowing all the historical facts but more in appreciating the variety, craftmanship, style and beauty of jewellery, this is a wrong book to own.

As the book title says, it covers a range of around 700 years, during which the development of personal jewellery for the middle classes had its birth. Showing a good number of images of existing pieces as well as occasional portraits, this book is very useful as a guide to types and materials for jewellery of the time period in question.As always with paperbacks, the size and quality of images is limited but useful as a pointer for more research on a particular piece or type.

One of the most amusing things about this slender book is that there are for-real parenting guides that advocate many of the approaches listed here! They change with the years, but when I was a new parent, I read actual advice books proposing the rudiments of at least half of these approaches.I am undecided whether to give it to my stepson and his wife in honor of their new baby... I'm not sure how snarky their sense of humor is.It's a quick read and very engaging, and the format and illustrations are perfect. If one is a parent oneself, it helps to be able to laugh at oneself! Like most good satire, sometimes it can hit close to home, although I'd expect the people following its "advice" the mostly wouldn't recognize themselves.There are so, so many parenting manuals and approaches out there. This is great for giving perspective! and, you know, for the laughs!

I didn't know what to expect upon getting this book for my husband. We do not have children by choice and he rather abhors children. I can tolerate children, but would rather not be around them. I had read a handful of reviews before purchasing the book and was very curious. Well, you can tell right away this book is a slam at parenting today. It was HILARIOUS! I think every new parent should be given one of these books when they leave the hospital, or better yet, be given one once pregnancy is confirmed! When it is told in this fashion, you can plainly see how screwed up kids could become. Just take the book for what it is and what it is not. It is a jab at today's parenting and not a real "How to Traumatize" book. Come on people!

Had to put it down a few times, it hit to close to home. Gives you insight into what not to do as a parent and is hysterical.

Seriously consider not doing these things to your children.

I really enjoyed this book. Sort of the devil’s advocate to all the different parenting styles that we know of to their extreme, and how negative that would be on your children. The takeaway for me is that all these “traumatic” parenting styles, if used equally would be the most beneficial for your children. There are definitely (in my opinion) pros and cons to each “trauma”, and they are unavoidable, so utilize them as best you can. Excepting that you will traumatize your children to some degree, excepting that it’s ok and not denying the truth of that, is the point of this book. An excellent point indeed

I have been trying to traumatize my children for twenty years and this book proves it can be done! Raising an entitled brat is no easy feat; giving kids every single thing they want and never saying no just shows how much you really love your kid and hate society. Count me in!You can have super rude, bratty, neurotic children in less than six weeks by following the recommendations in this brat bible. Look for my awful, entitled children to start hitting the job market in the next two-ten years, depending on how much of a door mat I choose to become as far as college tuition and sorority dues. You're welcome, America.Highly recommend--great read!

Even counseling and herbs were included in this editorial review of food-drug interactions.The appendices are truly a work of art covering some of our most common questions such as the contents of different elements in foods (i.e. gliadin, tyramine, histamine, calcium, vitamin K, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, oxalates, caffeine/methylxanthines, alcohol, and purines); the clinical significance of grapefruit juice/drug interactions as applied in a clinical setting, commonly used micronutrient and electrolyte additives in IV feedings; average pH values of bodily fluids to beverages, the most commonly prescribed generic and brand name medications and drug side-effects are just some of the topic areas.I consider this to be one of the most extensive pharmacological and scientific reference manuals in press today with almost 200 pages of appendices and 17 chapters that cover a multi-faceted array of topics that portray not only the mechanisms involved, but how to put this knowledge into practical and clinical use. It would make a great library edition, but is not practical, nor is it intended to be, the book you carry with you on rounds. On the other hand, this book identifies food interactions (and their mechanism) that the typical pocket-sized hand-book that you carry on rounds totally misses. This gives health care providers, such as physicians, a clear understanding of why dietitians make their recommendations and help dietitians understand what recommendations to make. For the pharmacist, this is a potpourri of issues that face the pharmacist every day in an encapsulated form. For the doctor, it helps him understand more about the medication (and the alternatives) he can prescribe in light of the presenting problem and recommendations received from the rest of the health care team. Not for the lay reader.
