I am in a fairly unique position to review this book being a permanent resident of the USA and having already gone through the application process, interviews etc. Even so, this book is still valuable giving you good advice as to what to expect and what you need to do once you become a permanent resident however this is not the target audience for this book.The book deals with all the different types of applications that you can get to legally gain entrance into the USA on a visa or applying for a green card (permanent residency). The book is split into chapters detailing each method from marrying a US citizenship through gaining a green card through work to applying for various visas (student visa, treaty trader etc). The will detail step by what you have to do, which forms you will need to complete (although it doesn't take you through completing the forms themselves) and is chock full of checklists of documents that you will need to provide.There are even chapters on immigration lawyers, when you should hire one, best practices on hiring an immigration lawyer etc.If you are looking to legally enter the USA on a visa or apply for a green card then I would recommend this book however it is not the end all and be all of immigration. Major ommissions are detailing the forms themselves and how to complete them (it will tell you which forms you need then basically just refers you to the online guidance on how to complete them).The information in this book is correct, easy to read and refer to and gives you lots of useful and practical guides and tips so that your application should be as painless as possible.

This book is well-written, like all of NOLO's books. So if you want to attempt applying for legal US status, this is a good way to find out more about the process. In the end, though, I think this book only reinforces the horrible tangle of US immigration and how difficult it is to navigate those waters. It explains enough to make you want to go out and get a lawyer!!1. First, the title is misleading. I understand that they want to sell books, but there is nothing about US immigration that is "easy". And this book won't help you if you are already in the country without papers. Just move on.2. Second, NOLO excels at simpler legal matters, like how to fight a traffic ticket, or how to be a better landlord. Immigration is a much tougher beast. I'm not sure that any book can really be comprehensive enough to do the job.3. I think that Nolo needs to be a little more forthright about the fact that this book will not help the majority of people that are trying to obtain legal status, and even those who are here legally (like students) probably won't be helped by this book.4. The number of glowing anonymous reviews is suspect, although it is possible that the posters are posting their reviews anonymously because they are afraid that somehow someone will be able to trace them. I have found that immigrants tend to be a suspect bunch (my parents are a prime example!).Now, despite all of these shortfalls, I still feel that the book deserves 4 stars. Why? Because Nolo's book is still the best one out there. I can't recommend any book that's better, which is unfortunate. So, if you are looking for a book on Immigration, buy this one. The Nolo press book on Fiancé visas is the best on the market, too, if your particular situation applies.

This is an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G book written by lawyers for humans. Excuse me, I mean, for non-lawyers.If you have ever read a legal text and then felt completely blank and immediately forgot what you've just read - this book is for you because it is so simple and so comprehensive you will have no difficulties reading it. And the instructions are precise and correct.

If you are unfortunate enough (as I was for an immigrant), then do yourself a favor and read this book. It is an extensive book, but some section are repetitive (due to similar regulations for different visa categories). It will also help you deal more effectively with an attorney in immigration matters and avoid many of the legal traps that has ensnared my new immigrants. I wish I had this during my time going through the INS system. If you are reading this for research or non-immigration purposes it will give me an appreciation for what new immigrants have to go through. Good Book .

This book is a good overview of the different visas available.However, it really skimps on details of applying for greencard & citizenship.In only one chapter, the many scenarios are all jumbled together, which causes me to be confused on which parts are relevant.I got much better detail from things on the internet. The author has other books that specifically focuses these topics, and they may be more useful.

NOLO is known for its thoroughly engaging publications. This one is no different. It is easily understood. Lay perople should have little difficulty getting a very necessary introduction to the complicated and complex world of Immigration. While it could never substitute for the advice and counsel of an experienced Immigration attorney, this book does provide the reader with more than a basic understanding of what's behind the various Immigration forms and applications. I highly recommend it.

This book gives you a good basic overview with enou detail to be helpful, but not overwhelming. Great for getting your feet wet,but wouldn't rely on it as a sole sourc if you are a petitioner, lawyer, or paralegal.

Thank you it was used but came in good condition. It has lots of great information that will help in the future.

Useless, don't waste your money.

This was one of the most irritating books I have read. The story was flat, two-dimensional, and utterly lacking in likable characters, plot, or feeling. While you can find summaries elsewhere, there are three things that I think made this book so terrible:1) The author is not American. This is okay—non-American authors write amazing things. The problem here is that she is a terrible writer with a limited imagination who wrote about a midwest town, that reads like a caricature. This shallow representation of life in Iowa comes across—especially from a European author with a European main character who is presented as wise and accepting and literate amidst the boorish and uneducated Iowans—incredibly condescending.2) As someone who loves books, this felt written by someone who googled some top ten book categories (American novels, classics, chick lit) and then inserted them into the novel. I can't believe that Bivald actually read, or enjoyed, any of the books she mentioned. Her main character's thoughts about these books could have been lifted from the inner book flap. No originality.3) The main character is one of those types who starts out meek and mild, yet by some grace everyone seems to like her, or she "grows" on people, through no effort of her own, no redeeming qualities, or no explicable cause.I cannot tell which of the above was more insulting to readers' intelligence, but I truly hated this book. It felt pandered to, talked down, and annoyed at a lost opportunity, because the premise was intriguing. The execution and the wildly inaccurate, unlikely, and superficial plotline were botched.

First, I LOVED the characters in this book; their personalities were delightful, and I loved how the love of books was practically another character.What I didn't love about this book was the random Harlequin romance-esque scenes. They just seemed so out of place; the book is going along displaying life in a small town when all the sudden there are taut muscles and shallow breathing.I also didn't like he random "hot topics" thrown in, but with very little development. Let's have a gay couple; okay, fine. Let's add a random gay kid whose actually bisexual having an affair with an older woman. Let's introduce an interracial couple but never learn anything about it.In summary, I wish the author had chosen to write a light vacation read or take the time to delve into the topics that she brings up. I can't decide if she was wanting to write a light novel, but got bogged down; or tried to write a deep novel examining the human condition, but was too lazy to develop it.

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend was an entertaining book that could have been incredible with more writing experience and a better editor. There were too many sudden coincidences, sudden inexplicable romances, vanishing (and appearing) characters and instances where it was necessary to use the old English class exercise of "willing suspension of disbelief," all of which distracted from a very cute story. Example number one: The book begins with the death of Amy and arrival of Sara (this is not a spoiler; it's in the description). Sara lives in Amy's house, takes over Amy's store and sells Amy's books for almost 3 months (also not a spoiler; it's in the description). During this 3 months, there is NO mention of a will. Who actually now owns Amy's house? Is Sara stealing Amy's property from another unmentioned character? People don't just die and have their stuff raided by whoever wants it. Life doesn't happen that way. Example number two: Gertrude and May are two highly entertaining characters who have a pretty decent role for the first 3/5 of the book and then just up and vanish, never to be mentioned again - not even in the climactic scenes. Example number three: The opposite. Characters who shall remain nameless to avoid spoilers just randomly appear without explanation for two or three chapters to force a plot twist, then just as randomly vanish. Example number four (last one): The romances are not believable. There is one that can be described as "I saw you; I know nothing about you; I want you now!" Again, most seem to have been thrown in to force a plot twist because the author thought there weren't enough in the book already.I know it seems as though I am trashing this book. But, I had such high hopes for it. It had entertaining characters, a good setting, and fabulous descriptions. But, I got so very frustrated from all of the "What-in-the-heck?" and "No way!" situations. The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend could have been amazing. I hope that as the author becomes more mature, she drops her infatuation with the sudden dramatic plot twist and concentrates on her ability to tell a good story.

This book took me a while to read as I only have time to read at night after the kids are in bed, but I easily picked up the story again and always seemed to put it down with a smile. I liked the depth of the characters, they were all flawed and imperfect. Yet one by one they revealed their individuality and beauty within. I also have always loved books so understood Sara's craving to escape into them. I also loved how she shared her fascination with each person, finding them just the right thing to help brighten their world. That is the power of books, turning the mundane into adventure, or at least possibilities. This was a great read, gentle and moving. Thumbs up!

I bought this for my 90 year old father who has dementia. He loves looking and reading through it and has so far gotten hours of enjoyment from it. This book is beautiful and being National Geographic you know it is quality. I would recommend this book for seniors to engage their minds and interest. Father has taken to sitting it on his bed at night so he can glance at it.

I bought this as a Christmas gift -- and had to read it myself before giving it away. This is a lovely coffee-table book filled with gorgeous photos. Every two pages has photos and a short write-up about the location, including the best way to get there and when to go. Very readable and entertaining. It will give you the travel bug. I gave it to my sister and she loves it too.

This is not one of my favorite NGS books, but it will be for many readers. I prefer the books that are comprised of out-of-this-world photographs. This book is a guide for would-be tourists. The book opens with a double-page spread of a world map with the destinations shown in the book marked on the map by category. It's perfect for people who have seen pictures of exotic locales who have the time and money to go visit those quaint locations. Each location has descriptive text and a few outstanding NGS photographs taken at each of those locations. This book will a must for many tourists. It's kind of nice having the geographical locations pointed out in one coffee table book. Its the kind of book that will be accompanied by a tourists handbook of places to see, stay and eat. I still have my ancient, dogeared copy of "Europe on $5 A Day." It was a perfect travel guide for its era. I actually spent six weeks traveling around Europe for under $5 per day. Of course, that price really didn't include airline fares and required a Euro-Train Pass and many nights sleeping on bunk beds or cots in dormitories in hostiles.This book does include a NGS photograph of the most famous sites in the 225 locations described and shown. That will keep the tourist from missing the main attraction of that piece of world geography.

Purchased as a gift for my nephew. The photography is stunning and the book was a hit with a school age boy with aspirations to travel the world someday. You know you've found a winner when a kid spends Christmas with his face in a book.

Gorgeous big book. Gave it to my husband for Christmas. He loves to travel and he loved the book. Very diverse locations, gorgeous pictures and a little story to go with. Some stories go on for a couple pages, many of them a little blurb. A little history, a little geography and one paragraph called "see it like a local" that husband likes very much.

I wanted a good looking yet interesting coffee table book and this is perfect!

This book is fantastic! It's large and sturdy so it works great as a coffeetable piece. There is just enough information on each destination that I can imagine it in my mind, but no so much information that I get overwhelmed with text. The photos are spectacular and the sidebar facts are great for just casually flipping through the book. Definitely worth the price for anyone who loves travel.

This is a beautiful book with amazing pictures. I bought it as a gift for someone who likes to travel and they loved it. I expected the destinations to be all exotic and quite frankly out of an average traveler's price range, however there was a healthy balance between far away, exotic places and more closer (to North America at least) and affordable options. There are not a lot of destinations in the southern hemisphere and Cape Town did not make the cut (which I thought would definitely be on the list). Overall the photographs are National Geographic standard which means it makes a beautiful book to look at even if you never travel to these destinations. I would definitely recommend this book and don't hide it in a bookcase once you have bought it.
