In this film clip of a Dilgo Khyentse oral "teaching," the English translation of his words is printed at the bottom of the screen, as he speaks. The text of the English translation indicates that he delivers a composed statement of compelling wisdom, precise and well stated. However, this oral "teaching" is sound recorded and, in English translation, may have been edited (for clarity). There is a total disconnect between the rich content of his oral teaching and his method of oral delivery.Parenthetically, Patrul Rinpoche - who authored the poem which is the subject of Dilgo Khyenste's commentary - also authored a magisterial tome entitled WORDS OF MY PERFECT TEACHER, a comprehensive overview of Tibetan Buddhism - which appears to be his magnum opus. Most of Patrul Rinposhe's written work has not survived. The first Yale University Press edition of WORDS OF MY PERFECT TEACHER was published in 2011, comprising an intimidating 500 pages, with the twice the number of words per page as in Dilgo Khyenste's THE HEART TREASURE OF THE ENLIGHTENED ONES.

This book is great! If you are interested in the evolutionary history of humans and their parasites, this is the book for you. It was exciting, revealing, educational, as well as appropriately ghoulish when describing the great plagues of recorded history, especially "Justinian's Plague" (6th century) and the Great Plague of the 14th century. His comparison between our micro-parasites (bacteria, worms, viruses) and our "macro-parasites" (governments, armies ,raiders, plunderers) was a particularly thought-provoking aspect of the book.Not for the faint of heart.

There does seem to be a correlation between the years that a writer immerses her or himself in the subject matter and the sheer number of sources cited. And then there are those writers that expand their own horizons and encompass and become proficient in many different subjects. Well, this book was deftly written by a writer of history that has also become proficient in biology. There's simply no other way to come up with the wonderfully focused hypothesis that there are not only microparasites in the environment, but also macroparasites such as governments and, well, business and real estate owners. It is our job to try to successfully negotiate our lives while keeping both forms at bay. In the past, however, and I'm talking from around 500 BC to near-present, microparasites weren't known about. When the plague--termed Pasturella pestis in the book instead of the more typically named Yrsinia pestis today--occurred it wasn't known to be a microparasite. No, it was blamed on many things, god, Jews, sin, any scapegoat really, until around 1850 in some places, though even today you'll find misdirection in knowledgeless pockets.What is more, the author took great pains to research how often and what impact microparasite had on the course of human history, flushing out the 100s of times it occured in China alone from recorded history in 320 or so BC, based upon the work of Joseph Cha. So maybe many of the wars that were won by the few over the many were done so because the many were already being microparasitized and couldn't defend themselves. Too, the real winner has been the microparasites, having killed far more than any war, though they killed mostly when introduced to a population that hadn't seen them before, for a "proper" parasite will learn to not kill in order to best survive. And that is where we are today, at an equilibrium of population with both macro and microparasites, thanks no doubt to medical science enabling our uneasy relationship.Highly recommended... - lc

The thesis of the book is quite interesting. Occasionally, some of the postulations and historical facts engage you.But overall, this book is in dire need of a better editor. I read a lot of heavier nonfiction and understand that such topics won’t read like fiction. Even so, this was hard to read. I rarely ever quit on a book but seriously considered doing so about 50 pages in. Thankfully, the last 3/4 of the book are better.

In this 1976 work, acclaimed historian William McNeill investigated the role of parasitism (both micro in the form of disease and macro in the form of rulers and governments) on the rise and fall of historical societies. To say that "Plagues and Peoples" was a success would be a monumental understatement as almost all subsequent discussions of the role of disease in history start from here. In discussing the way in which epidemics begin, run through a population and then may become a part of a series of non-lethal but persistent childhood diseases, McNeill arrives at a paradigm that fundamentally alters the way in which epidemiology is seen historically. In short, this work was and still is revolutionary.The biggest drawback of the book is the style in which it is written. The text is written in the way in which a scholar might have communicated with interested colleagues outside of the typical discourse one might find in scholarly journals. As such, the language is somewhat geared towards the specialist and the text assumes the reader has at least a passing familiarity with the broader historical context of the societies the author is discussing. While this isn't as much of a problem for the discussions about epidemics affecting the west, there is a good bit of material about China, India, the Middle East and Africa (though less so in the last three). Also, the chapters are often rather long and span several thematic ideas which would likely have been separated into separate chapters had the book been written to more recent editorial guidelines. This makes the book a bit of tough sledding at times as it can tend to bog down with the sheer weight of the information being presented and a lack of a narrative thread at times.For me, the most compelling discussion was the effect of the introduction of Old World diseases into the New World. The mortality statistics are stunning and offer a chilling prediction of what might happen if a disease to which there is little resistance is released into a modern urbanized setting.I recommend this book to any student of history, epidemiology or sociology. Be prepared to push through some dense text but you will definitely be rewarded for your perseverance.

Author does a great job of walking through both the how and why of python's functional programming capabilities. First programming book I've read that actually details the implementation of the code and what it's doing. I do not have a computer science background and the author's format and explanations for how the code works behind the scenes I found extremely insightful. This will be a book I routinely refer to. I will definitely check out Steven Lott's other books!

I'm not entirely sure how much I liked this book. There were parts in where Pete Hamill really raised my brow on some insightful tidbits on the history of Manhattan, but there were a lot of lulls where it was hard to keep reading. In the end I figured this read jumped between a five star book and a three that it was good enough.Hamill has a great writing style and can play up nostalgia very well. He made me feel like some of the things that no one alive today could be old enough to remember seem like something that happened yesterday. In a sense it almost did in terms of relative time, when the Dutch carved out the first settlement on the island, to when the British captured the city in the war, to when the bums got the boot on the lower east side. Walking around knowing what I know now from this book really is fascinating that way. I also did a bit of fact checking myself on some of the specific details he mentioned, and it would seem didn't skimp on the research. This is no wikipedia research paper, his dates and facts check out.Another thing that I like is that he kind put my mind to ease a bit. This change quickly here in New York, especially the things you love. Veselka is mentioned, a wonderful Polish diner, one that I do care about, and I want it to be around forever like it seemingly has been. But nothing lasts forever, as Hamill points out. The trick is to not anguish over the loss and accept it. Veselka will be gone one day, but hopefully by then I will have found something else to move my love to. I always felt especially angry at what happened to my home in Manhattan, Tribeca, because of how real estate fiends came in and essentially forced everyone out to make way for Bed Bath and Beyond as well as over paid yuppies. After reading Downtown, and seeing how change like this is part of my home town history, and to appreciate being there when it was beautiful made me a little less upset.The reason this book want a life changing five star knock out is that sometimes I managed to get bored. The sentimental parts do kind of drone on and on. I think when Hamill wrote about the parts where he wasn't around to witness the events were more interesting simply because more of the facts but still delivered in a clever way. Then you get to the point where he is born. From there it gets mushy. I liked it better when he was able to remove himself a little more and focus on the shared history rather than his personal one. Sometimes it was interesting, but often it wasn't.

We recently took a wonderful tour of the Hard Hat section of Ellis Island, and our tour guide through this abandoned hospital, once on a par with Columbia Presbyterian and Memorial Sloan Kettering, was wonderfully knowledgeable about lower Manhattan. He said that he found Hamill book essential for anyone wanting a very readable, fact filled, and exciting history of that part of Manhattan Island.I bought a copy as soon as I got home, it arrived in 24 hours, and I devoured it in about three hours. Wonderful stuff -- excellent writing and very reliable -- I checked it against the superb The Encyclopedia of New York City: Second Edition about 20 times. Incidentally, that encyclopedia comes in an ibook and I often check for more information when hiking around NYC or when reading a hard copy book like Hamill's -- an essential companion while exploring this fantastic city.I've taken off one star, a bit reluctantly, but I found Hamill's personal stories distracting. I think a more careful editor might have move those personal sections into either a Forward or preferably an Afterword, and referenced Hamill's experience with footnotes in the main text.Nevertheless, this is superb history, very well told, and highly reliable.Robert C. Pete Hamill's "Downtown: My Manhattan" is part of the latest spate of books that combine personal New York City experience and New York City history, as do Colson Whitehead's "The Colossus of New York" (in a way) and Phillip Lopate's "Waterfront". However, Hamill's is as different from those two other books as those two books are different from each other. I don't know what is causing these authors to write such material--maybe the nostalgia brought about by the horrors of 9/11--but I'm glad they did.Nostalgia is the key word for Hamill's "Downtown". And it is not just the strong, personal nostalgia that Hamill luxuriates in: it's also the nostalgia that every true New Yorker feels for his City. Whether it was the Dutch or British who longed for their roots in the "Old World", as did the Irish, Eastern Europeans, Italians, Asians, Latinos, etc., or the people born here who cherish the memories of people and places now locked forever in the past, New York's ever-changing "scene" quickly compels our present into history. Hamill's sensitivity to this is brilliantly conveyed on every page.However, "Downtown" is by no means a treacly, misty-eyed glimpse backward. It is a studied and educational examination of several of New York's neighborhoods--some well-known, some not. The pieces about the Bowling Green area and Times Square were the most fascinating.What, to me, is special about this history is how it intertwines with other histories: with America's history, with Hamill's history, with my history, and, if you are a New Yorker, your history. I could not put down "Downtown"; in fact, I read it cover to cover in two sittings (I had to go to sleep) and then read it again. It's that amazing a book.

A great book! PH knows NY and its' history and how it has evolved over the years. PH loves NY, and especially Manhattan - warts and all, and all its' stories of the people who have lived there from the earliest days until now.Even so, it is not a love song to NY at all. No sweet sentiments or longing for what used to be. It's much more than that. This book is a story that takes place over time: good times, bad times, ups and downs.
