This plastic canvas stitch dictionary was recommended to me by a friend as an excellent resource. So I ordered it sight unseen. And I am so glad I took a chance. Although I consider myself experienced, this will be a great resource to me as I make projects such as tissue covers. It is the subtle details that count when I am stitching a solid color. I am eager to try out some of the stitches in this book.

Amazing. This is my new go to book for plastic canvas & making my own projects. It brings a touch of class to a craft that can be a bit kitchy. The instructions are simple, comprehensive and most importantly easy to follow. A must have for any one who loves crafting with plastic canvas!

This stitch dictionary is a treasure. My partner and I both enjoy plastic canvas and have recently felt comfortable trying more complicated projects or adjusting patterns. This is a wonderful resource for understanding new stitches and supplementing the instructions on the patterns themselves, which often assume knowledge or offer only a basic direction. As we're interested in creating our own patterns ultimately, I suspect we'll return to this resource regularly.

Easy to follow stitch instructions. Chose plastic canvas as a starter sewing project for the children who were asking to do cross stitch and needle point. They were inspired by the many different stitches and quickly moved into using the stitches to make their own designs. Very pleased with this inspiration. There are a few sampler projects in the back that use the stitches in the dictionary but it is mostly a dictionary of stitches with easy to follow graphics.

I knew a few stitches from previous needlepoint, and only a couple from plastic canvas activities. Wow, after Christmas, I will have a blast trying new stitches. I plan to make Christmas villages for my 3 grand daughters, and they are going to be more interesting with this stitch dictionary to help me up my game.

I like that it shows so many stiches to make, I wish their were more projects in the book, but I guess I have to be a little more creative on my own.

This book has tons of patterns that can be used by themselves or to fill in the backgrounds of other designs. From easy to more complicated.

This is a great book to have if you create your own patterns like I sometimes do. Many ideas that I had never thought of before. Even if you mainly follow already created patterns then this book is helpful in enhancing those patterns and making them your own.

Not what I expected. Not a book for beginners.

This is a book that teaches the steps and basic abilities needed to sketch any object that you see. It begins by giving you a realistic assumption about what to expect out of it, which is to sketch objects 'roughly' accurately in 15 minutes i.e quick. To go further, the title is a bit misleading in that you are not going to learn to sketch in 15 minutes, rather after reading the book and following the methods, you will be able to sketch an object in 15 minutes. Actual reading-to-learn time I would estimate would take several days to get the jist down. The structure goes something like this:1. Learn what it is you are actually doing i.e. how to approach sketching, say, a building.2. Learn how to start from the basics -- shell -- shape -- structure -- details.3. Different types of contrast lines and how to draw them appropriately.4. The tools needed to sketch. In general, you *will* come out of this book with a different approach to drawing. Coming from someone who has a very artistic mind, but cannot, in anyway, relate that onto a page by drawing, this book allowed me to approach drawing in a different way that will allow me to focus my thoughts on drawing bit by bit. You will, then, be able to sketch quite well following this book however don't expect complicated drawing aspects explained. This will only teach you a very basic and straightforward sketch. I would say this is perfect for a traveler who, instead of wanting to take pictures, has the urge to draw a place they are at, or an event they are experiencing. You can then look back and be 'there' again -- albeit roughly.Good book overall, just don't expect detailed instructions on minute details of sketching.

Having sketched most of my life, I lack the rigor to be a “true artist”. When I was in high school, I loved to draw, but had little patience to really learn to do it well. I then spent 20 years on a drawing board drafting mechanical parts and schematics. Trust me, this is not “artistic”. However I still did “hand-done” 3D machine sketches to provide with estimates or to describe something, I was working on. So you see where I’m going. These two parts of my brain were very separate. Orthographic projection (most mechanical drawings) deals with a lot of detail, but even then you don’t dimension or include everything. So where am I going with this? This book discusses the mechanics of drawing pictures of cityscapes and brings in some fundamental drawing principles. Many aspects of a good drawing are:**** What are the boundaries of your drawing?**** What level of detail do you plan to incorporate?Items such as this; despite knowing enough to do this in mechanical drawing, I never put in practice in my hand sketches, so often I had unbalanced sketches, of way too much detail in areas, I did not care about. Maybe you do too. This book if you put some of the ideas in practice will help you sort that out. Some of the way it does that is in the chapters below.INTRODUCTION:Exploring why you want to draw and the equipment necessary to do so.FUNDAMENTAL DRAWING SKILLS:I found this section essential. There are somethings as a sketcher, I have never done properly. This gives you a whole bunch of common sense tips and tricks, that to be honest, never dawned on me. I and maybe you start sketching and then wonder what happened. This section helps you frame what you want to draw and helps you make those decisions upfront, so by the time you are drawing you have a clear path. None of it is hard.BEGINNING THE DRAWING:Imagine this, starting with a rough framework and then steps to work to what your desired end product is.COMMON CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES:What makes this book work is all the sketches inside showing what the artist means. It helps with the why and when.LIGHT AND SHADE:This is a great section that no beginning artist thinks through fully. It helps you do understand why, good artists drawings look better.ENTOURAGE:All the other stuff that is around buildings, trees, vehicles & people. Completes the drawing. However you get to pick or choose what you include. The drawing should represent what you want to portray, not a 100% faithful reproduction.CONCLUSIONIn the end it takes practice. You also need to learn from your failures. Essentially, what you might consider a failure is when you don’t achieve what you set out to do. This is a learning opportunity, not so much a failure as you are practicing. Further advice to try new approaches once you get into a rut, as it will only freshen up your skill set.Overall this is a great book with valuable advice and I hope to get cracking on drawing again, as I feel this has given me some great pointers.

A beginners guide that will give you all the tools and terms to get you started. The book starts with the usual introduction to the materials you'll need and fundamental skills you'll need to get started. This is the usual stuff you'll find in a majority of drawing books, but I liked the crosshatching section. This type of shading and technique is usually not covered in most books, but if you're going to do environment or urban sketching, hatching is a great tool.42 pages in you get to the real meat of the book. There are 3 really good examples of how to start your lay-in, and how to build from that point. The only thing I don't like about these examples is the lesson on perspective comes after that. It would have been better to come before that so you get an idea of the perspective the artist was going for in the examples in case you want to follow along. The lessons on perspective are good and cover most of the basics, but if you want to get better at that I would follow up with some additional lessons.Other things that stuck out to me were lessons on windows and water. That's rarely ever talked about and is a much-needed lesson.I don't want to go on and on in full detail about the rest of the book. I recommend this for beginners of urban or environmental art. This covers all the basics to get you started. If you are a true beginner it won't explain in detail what everything is, but it's a great book to get you started drawing and to ask the right questions of your teachers or just looking up something online.

It's a good study guide. You must have a very pronounced ability to use your instrument to tackle some of the more advanced lessons available. But it's a good lesson guide and I recommend it to all serious musicians.

Really good exercises. Seems like the alto sax equivalent of Rose for Clarinet.

I bought it for my saxophone repertoire! I love it. It has really gave me something to practice on when I'm bored of the old things i have. I PROMISE IT'S TOTALLY WORTH BUYING FROM THIS SELLER! FORGET IT'S PAPER COVER, WHAT YOU WANT IS THE ETUDES INSIDE!

This is great for building technique and other minor things when playing. It has etudes in every single key major, and minor, i highly recommend this book and the 48 Famous studies and 3 duos concertants for oboe or saxophone

This was ordered for a teenager in college who needed the book fast. Its exactly what she wanted.

This is a good book for advanced players. Challenging, but interesting.

Great book for anyone serious about playing the sax. Highly recommend.

This book will be challanging to the young player. Great review material for the musician who hasn't picked up the saxophone for a while. Well worth the practice time.

Little Soldiers: An American Boy, a Chinese School, and the Global Race to Achieve, by Lenora Chu

Review

“No reporter has gone as deep as she has into what makes Chinese and American schools different today, or given more reasons we should not copy the Chinese. Yet her rollicking account has hope for both cultures, because they share a deep interest in what children learn.” (Washington Post)“Chu’s narrative is told with the honesty of a journalist, allowing readers to understand the conclusions she draws from her journey but also to form their own view of Chinese education. For anyone who wishes to expand their understanding about Chinese society and its impact on education.” (Library Journal, starred review) “This book had me at page one! Whip smart, hilariously funny, and shocking. A must-read.” (Amy Chua, author of The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and The Triple Package)“Anyone will understand [China] better after reading this book…. Chu vividly sketches these differences [between Chinese and American school systems] in terms that will make readers ponder what they actually think about rote memorization and parents question their preferences for their own children.” (New York Times)“This engaging narrative is personalized by Chu’s often humorous recollections of attending American schools as the daughter of immigrants. Little Soldiers offers fascinating peeks inside the world’s largest educational system and at the future intellectual “soldiers” American kids will be facing.” (Booklist)“Undoubtedly revealing, fascinating, and filled with ‘aha’ moments.” (Christian Science Monitor)“This is a rare look inside the gates of Chinese schools that helps demystify many traits and behaviors of the Chinese people.” (Deborah Fallows, contributing writer for The Atlantic and author of Dreaming in Chinese)“Lenora Chu, a gifted journalist, has written a fascinating comparison of the US and Shanghai education systems. Little Soldiers offers important insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each. There is much to be learned here about the elements of a better education system for the 21st century.” (Tony Wagner, Expert in Residence, Harvard University Innovation Lab and author of The Global Achievement Gap and Creating Innovators)“An investigative look at the Chinese educational system and how it produces such a large number of high-performing students.” (Book Riot)“This provocative investigation examines cultural differences between the East and West, and the benefits and shortcomings of how both approach education.” (Real Simple, “The Best New Books to Read This Month”)

From the Back Cover

When American journalist Lenora Chu moved to Shanghai with her little boy, Rainey, just down the street from the state-run school—the best, as far as elite Chinese were concerned—she faced an important decision: Should she entrust her rambunctious young son to the Chinese public schools? It seemed like a good idea at the time, and so began Rainey’s immersion in one of the most radical school systems on the planet. Almost immediately, the three-year-old began to develop surprising powers of concentration and became proficient in early math. Yet Chu also noticed disturbing new behaviors: Whereas he used to scribble and explore, Rainey was now obsessed with staying inside the lines. He became fearful of authority figures. “If you want me to do it, I’ll do it,” he told a stranger who had asked whether he liked to sing.Driven by parental concern, Chu embarked on an investigative mission: What price do the Chinese pay to produce their “smart” kids, and what lessons might Western parents and educators learn from this system? In her search for answers, Chu followed Chinese students, teachers, and experts, pulling back the curtain on a military-style education system in which even the youngest kids submit to high-stakes tests and parents are crippled by the pressure to compete. Yet as Chu delved deeper, she discovered surprising upsides, such as the benefits of memorization, competition as a motivator, and the Chinese cultural belief in hard work over innate talent.Lively and intimate, beautifully written and reported, Little Soldiers asks us to reconsider the true value and purpose of education, as China and the West compete for the political and economic dominance of a new generation.

I have been teacher for twenty-five years. My wife was born in China and went to Chinese schools. Our children are of school age. So, of course, we occasionally discuss the different experience she had in China. This book is the best I have read that takes a good look at how Chinese schools actually work. The author, Ms. Chu, and her husband, are Americans living and working in Shanghai when their son, Rainey, becomes school-aged. They debate whether to send him to a “Western” private school or a Chinese public school. When they manage to get him into one of the most prestigious Chinese public schools they decided to give it a try. At the same time, Ms. Chu decides to take a close look at the Chinese system at every level. It turns out to be an eye-opening experience. The most compelling parts of this book are Ms. Chu’s reactions to what happens with Rainey and what is required of her as the parent of a student at a Chinese school. In his first weeks in kindergarten, Rainey is “taught” to sit in his chair, back straight, feet flat on the floor, hands on his knees. He is force-fed foods he refuses to eat. He memorizes and recites. Initially, she seems repelled by this, but is impressed by how Rainey learns to self-manage his behavior and the fact that his behavior at home doesn’t seem significantly impacted by what he is able to accomplish at school for his teachers and principal. In fact, she learns that, if she doesn’t like what the school is doing, she is more than welcome to remove Rainey because there is a long list of students more than anxious to take his place. Rainey stays. In fact, Ms. Chu learns that, in Chinese society, the school staff has far more power and expects much more respect than teachers in the United States have ever been given. As much as Rainey, she receives assignments from her son’s teachers that she is expected to complete. She becomes enmeshed in a process of procuring “presents” for the teachers at her son’s school from the United States, including (cliché) expensive handbags.Despite the speed bumps, however, she seems to come to an accommodation with Rainey’s school and is happy with his progress. What appears more problematic is the expectations down the line. Ms. Chu becomes friends with a some high school students preparing for college. One is educated exclusives in China while another goes to the U.S. for high school (and other is a provincial with little chance of success). All (including, most obvious, the parents) are worried about the gaokao, the test that students must pass to enter prestigious colleges in China. The one educated exclusively in China takes the Party line as a matter of course. The one with American education chafed against what was required, though perfectly capable of achieving it. The story that stands out is her discussion of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. In China students read a bowdlerized version that has a specific, government-approved interpretation that students are expected to parrot back. The experience at the American high school is, obviously, different. And here is the crux of the battles between the two styles of education: should students be forced through a discipline-driven, strict curriculum which seems to stifle free-thinking and invention, or should students be allowed a freer experience that encourages innovation and ingenuity at the expense of management and self-control? The answer, not surprisingly, seems to be some balance between the two, though the passionate on both sides of the Pacific are unwilling to come to an accommodation. Maybe if more people lived the differences, like Ms. Chu, something could be achieved. In any case, this book is an excellent read.

I know it is too early and hasty for me to write comments about Lenora Chu's LITTLE SOLDIERS as I am only on p.107 of the book, but I cannot help but tell how much I am enjoying reading this book. I have never laughed so much while reading a book as I do on this one as the narrative of the book portrays a living experience and a world that are realistic, unique, and "funny". Though the book is focused on the author's own experience in China (Shanghai) about her little son Rainey's education, it in fact explores and reveals broader cultural uniqueness, differences and human (collective and individual) behaviors in China. Being a Chinese born American myself, I cannot help but exam my own experience as a kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school student in China (I received my college and post-graduate degrees in the U.S,). Furthermore, I do have serious concerns about many aspects of the education in this country. Because of the very interesting, revealing, reflective, and enjoyable presentation of the book, I have ordered 5 more copies of LITTLE SOLDIERS for my family members. Perhaps I will write more about this book when I finish reading it.Now I have finished reading the book. After chapters that made me laugh, the following two chapters provide a very sad and cruel portrait of the education in small towns and rural areas. I emailed a young friend in a small town in Sichuan, telling him what I read. He answered me that what Chu's book told were entirely true. The young friend says that in small cities and villages, many schools are closed and teachers are not willing to come to the rural areas. Furthermore there are no students. In small towns and villages there are only old people and young kids, those in the middle (teens and secondary school aged) are all looking for jobs in the cities. Since their "Hukou" (registered birth place) are in rural areas or small towns, they can never get into schools where they are working. It is more difficult to get into a school due to the "hukou" problem than to apply for an immigration status to the U.S..The most thoughtful and important part of the book is the author's comparison of the educational idea, views and practices between the U.S. and China. For this, I do wish readers to give more careful reading and thoughts to these pages. Education will not only determine the success and failure of our future generations, it will affect the future of our nation as well.

Having an interest in cross cultural comparisons, a great deal of experience teaching all ages of Chinese students in Asia and the U.S., and a curiosity about what my Chinese university students experienced, this book was really interesting to me.I've talked with Chinese university professor parents who've done the opposite of what the author did- pulled their children out of Chinese schools to send them to international schools because of the emotional dangers and out of hands pressure and angry teaching that occurs there. Interestingly, it was after 6th grade, similar to what the author said she planned for her on son.I can't help thinking that there is definitely some happy medium that both can protect the kids emotionally and creatively while giving them firm educational foundations.

Absolutely intriguing. Well written and I love that Chu is a mom as she's writing... her journalism has a transparency and vulnerable quality because of her viewpoint as a parent. As a homeschool mom, I'm far from being enamored with the current state of public education in the US. I did see some parallels to the Chinese approach taken in the younger grades to a classical model of memorizing while children are very young... In contrast, the pressure placed upon students and families to test well is beyond disturbing.

#16,530 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this with an interest in doing less scolding and more support of my children. It does have some helpful things about distractions and focusing on your kids. If you don't have babies I would skip that chapter as it makes it seem as if all is lost if you haven't done what she says. There are a lot of gender sterotypes and not mention of children who struggle with ASD, ADHD, or learning disabilities. I keep thinking "well sure this is EASY if your child has a good working short term memory" my eldest with ADHD does not. What I found useful could be put into a pamphlet.

Love this book it really helps understand many things about parenting and how to address some situations with not only little ones but also with teenagers

Excellent tips for how to communicate with your kids at all ages.

Very helpful

As a “trustee,” in my case a private music teacher in an affluent community without my own kids, this book provides a helpful glimpse into the challenges that contemporary parents face. It also deepened my appreciation for the sublime gift it is to be in a position of trust as I watch these curious aliens grow and develop as they fulfill their unique destinies.

As a mother of a soon to be teenager and more to come I have been searching books that would help me guide my teen as well as my little's I have in my own home. This book is practical hands on lessons that even teens could use as a reference when talk to adults and their friends. I learned so much from this book on how words can effect someone from when they are growing as young child to adulthood. Just the difference between the use of a term as well as the sound of your voice can change who a child will interpret you.I am sharing this book with all the moms I know.Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Wendy Mogel Voice Lessons for Parents

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley for free in exchange for an honest review.Wendy Mogel has written an accessible and straightforward guide for parents who want to communicate more effectively with their children. The book is organized by age and then a chapter with specific suggestions for boys and another for girls. I really liked the honesty and lack of condescension in this book. As the mother of a third-grade daughter, I admit that I gave the chapters focusing on girls a much closer read than those that focused on boys.I appreciate the very specific advice in Voice Lessons for Parents and know that I will be referring to it frequently.

Reading the whole book isn't really the way most would approach this book. Since it is broken down by age and gender, it works to just read the relevant parts for the time a parent is living or about to live. In these areas, there are some very helpful suggestions and considerations hidden among some things that felt less ground-breaking.As a teacher, I was hoping to get more perspective on how teachers can also talk to students, but the dynamic of parents is so different from that of a teacher, most was not relevant to my job. I would, however, recommend that many parents (especially involved parents) read this in order to figure out how to let go somewhat for children to grow up and let go. A lot of what she had to say about the accidental pressure and interference in school and activities for teenagers really resonated with me.

R.C. Sproul expounds on these Parables in a way I found meaningful but, if you're going to watch this series I recommend you be prepared to separate the wheat from the chaff. I was with this guy all the way to around the middle of the third episode, at which time he lost my respect completely with a brazen appeal using guilt and fear tactics to openly condemn those who don't tithe to the church by strongly suggesting they have very little chance of salvation if they don't, with great intensity. If he thinks he's a Shepherd he might be confused about his job. I'm not sure the more successful Shepherds use guilt and condemnation to guide their flocks to greener pastures. It doesn't seem like it would be effective to that end. I get the strong impression he thinks that people should trust him and others to use their money to do God's work rather than trusting God to guide each individual to dedicate a portion of their own money specifically doing it themselves. Maybe he just thinks we're all just too stupid to trust our in own relationships with God to guide us in doing the right thing... Jesus railed relentlessly against organized religion during his lifetime (this being one of the main reasons: the whole money is the root af all evil-money is power: power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely type thing). I wonder what Jesus would have said to him, and the others for not having spoken up themselves, if he had been sitting in this audience? TO BE CLEAR: I do think he explained the Parables he spoke of very well but, since that telling moment, I doubt he truly applies many of the things he SAYS so well. I'm still going to watch the rest of the series. This is just a warning I felt compelled to post in reference to this disturbing moment that led me to strongly question his personal intent. Great stuff other than that... The old adage "love the sinner:hate the sin is coming in pretty handy for me right now. If you choose to watch: good luck, and God bless. If you don't: good luck and God bless.

I use these as a study and teaching guide. R C Sproul is very through. His descriptions are complete, and easy to understand. I certainly recommend these tapes to students of the scriptures, as well as those wanting a better understanding of the parables.

anything rc sproul teaches is on point. no doubt God works through him.

Wonderful teaching!
