A former federal prosecutor, Paul Butler provides legal commentary for MSNBC and NPR and has been featured on 60 Minutes and profiled in the Washington Post. A law professor at Georgetown University, he is the author of Let’s Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice, winner of the Harry Chapin Media Award, and Chokehold: Policing Black Men (both from The New Press). Paul Butler's "Chokehold: Policing Black Men" is a comprehensive study into the psychology of America's criminal justice (or injustice) system. In "Chokehold" Butler answers critical questions concerning the impact of the American criminal justice system on African American men. He provides well documented support for his conclusion that the system is designed to subjugate African Americans. Given the central role of race in the allocation of societal resources, Butler cogently argues that correcting this system is not merely a matter of clearing up misconceptions through dialogue or adopting modest reforms. Instead, he postulates that the American criminal justice structure must be restructured from the ground up. Butler effectively conveys the point that policing will not change significantly for African Americans until such comprehensive change happens. Until then, African Americans (especially African American men) will remain under a chokehold. I recommend this book.

This is an excellent book. It is essentially written for younger black males but is a useful read for anyone interested in racial/social justice IMO. Mr. Butler covers a number of issues around the criminal (in)justice system as it applies to black men but he also makes clear that black women are also victimized both from the color of their skin and their gender. In spite of being an old white male, I applaud Mr. Butler and other contemporary authors who continue to pull the cover back on the truly appalling situation we have in America regarding racial/social injustice. Given the politics of the day I fear it will get worse before it gets better. I encourage my fellow white people to read with an open mind and step up and speak out.

Chokehold is a great and necessary book to read even though the content is difficult. Anyone who doesn't understand why they kneel, whether appropriate or not, will understand after reading this well-written book. It made me angry, outraged, and very sad. It is a necessary book for anyone who cares about our failing criminal justice system

For the conditions in the urban areas, for anyone that has wondered WHY at this point the condition of black people in america remains mainly unchanged even after having Mr Obama in office. This book clearly explains the Why and the How..

A devastating description of what it's like to be policed while black in the US. I couldn't help wondering whether some of the grander claims were overstated but then considered the evidence presented and found it difficult to dispute.

Imagine what things could potentially be like, or the much-needed changes that could be made if every black person, especially the prominent ones, exercised this sort of courage, ingenuity, and altruism. Props to Mr. Butler, and to this extraordinary Book!

I have long been a bit fascinated by Gov. Christie and his ‘in your face, shock and awe’ approach to politics. In my mind, it’s based on the Rush Limbaugh philosophy. Of course, I abhor pundits and politicians who use this tactic, because it, ultimately, crowds out other ideas and tends to weaken democracy.So, my hope was to glean an understanding of Christie, Donald Trump, and the dynamics of Trump’s inner circle. Did I succeed?Yes, to a greater extent than I probably should have. Indeed, I have grown disappointed at just how similar Trump’s team is to that displayed on the old TV soap opera, Dallas. But that gets ahead of this review...BLUSH FACTOR: Although the number of eff-words is not large, they are present, so consider your own circumstances before purchasing this. For me, it did not detract. Nor do I think anybody should refuse to buy this book for the cussing.WRITING & EDITING: Co-writer Ellis Henican has done a terrific job of polishing up what must have been a dynamic tirade.Possibly, the most telling passage comes in the discussion of Gov. Christie’s appointment to chair the transition. We get a little insight into Trump’s mind, but we get a keener insight into Jared Kushner and, possibly, into precisely what threatens to derail the Trump Presidency.DISAPPOINTMENTS: Christie does give us some frank assessment of Donald Trump, but with nowhere near the degree of frankness for which The former governor was famed. Mind you, we should not be surprised, for he remains a Trump loyalist. Still, I had hoped that he would use his shock and awe to rattle Donald Trump in a sort of shock treatment, before the Administration implodes upon itself.BOTTOM LINEFar more interesting read than recent books by Ms Clinton, so I definitely recommend it. A total waste of time. Its basically Christie saying "look at me, look at how great I am." Its a self serving, self congratulatory, pat on his own back full of nonsense.It makes you realize how much like Trump he really is. A bully, a braggart, someone who thought only he could fix it when it came to NJ. After reading this all I can think is this is his lead up to another run.

To me it’s a great compliment when someone tells me that I write like I talk… and I talk like I write. That is definitely the compliment I am giving Chris Christie. His straight from the heart storytelling of his life… is just like listening to him talk on a TV program. He shares with the reader his toughness… as well as his inner soul. From the love of his parents and family… to the hard times he had in his early marriage… pride intertwined with disappointment in how his high school baseball career wound up… to being a U.S. Attorney… hell bent on cleaning up the government in New Jersey… where in a seven year period his office would charge nearly ten percent of their state legislature.His story will grab you right from the get-go… starting off with a mano-a-mano confrontation with Trump “campaign CEO”… Steve Bannon. (Actually it couldn’t have been mano-a-mano… because each “mano” needs a spine and integrity… and only one of them… Christie… fit those requirements.) When Bannon was firing Christie from the campaign despite Christie’s heavy involvement and direction… including but not limited to… being the first major political figure to endorse candidate Trump. From there the author goes back to his childhood… his upbringing his education… his early jobs… and his almost lifetime love of politics which was originally nurtured by his Grandmother… his rise through the many branches of government… including his two terms as New Jersey Governor… and his run for President.All the names that are constantly on the news every day of our lives now… from the big to the small… and the ones we wished would disappear… from Clinton to Rubio to Conway to Manafort… to Bush(s)… to Sessions to Obama(s)… all the cabinet members… and opponents. Christie's’ wild ride includes an almost choice as Vice Presidential candidate… and consideration for Attorney General…If that isn’t enough… there is Springsteen and “SHAQ”... and a Hurricane created by Mother Nature… named Sandy… and the human hurricane named Christie… described as only Chris Christie is capable of doing! I don’t care what side of the aisle you sit on… this is a book that almost turns its own pages… once you open it up.

I have always been on the fence about Christie and in this book he won me over a bit more. I admire the work he did as US attorney and I do think he is smart. I think he is being conned by Trump and still doesn’t see him for what he is. One thing I do agree with, he spent a lot of time and effort on the transition, and all of it went into the trash. This was due to Kushner and the axe he has to grind with his father’s arrest and conviction. I also agree that Trump filled his cabinet with grifters, and crooks, look, most are now indicted, or have plead guilty. Christie does take a lot of time in the book patting himself on the back, which I am sure many of us would do. Come on, he had the lowest rating of any governor ever when he left, he couldn’t have done that without screwing up.

A straight talker, articulate, interesting even when infuriating to many. But this book is a total bore. Nothing new. A puff piece, written in a non-controversial way, so that, if he runs for office, or faces senate hearings, he hasn't insulted anybody. Sadly, Governor, you apparently ARE finished.

I’ve been a fan of Gov Christie for a long time. I loved it when he got in Rubios face during the debate and Rubio melted on stage. This book provides a real account inside the 2016 election. If you’re a Republican you’ll enjoy it. Dems will obviously give it a one star.

Pretty basic outline, described in a few different scenarios to help get the creative juices flowing. Its not going to write the plan for you, but it will help provide that inspiration to get it done.

This is good for what it was, its VERY short, much like all these style books. I don't know why I thought it would be longer, I don't know how much information I expected a book on a single plan to entail. But the information was good, learned something new.

I had heard of 30/60/90 day plans, but never knew it could be so valuable. This makes it easy to understand and how to create one. The best part is that if you use it in an interview, it can get you a job offer. It worked for me and it can work for anyone else willing to take an hour to prepare a 30/60/90 day plan. This was the best interview advice I have ever seen!

30/60/90 is an interesting and apparently successful means of landing the job. Married up with other interview resources, this may be considered top of the line in resource material. A MUST READ

My daughter and all my grandchildren have learned their colors by having a My First Colors book read to them from the time of their birth. Every one of them could recognize and say their colors as soon as they could talk -- at 17 months, my oldest granddaughter pointed at the blue jello served to her in a restaurant and said, "boo." And now he she is expecting a daughter who will learn colors the same way. This book is a great, timeless teaching tool that provides an easy bonding time for the child and the person who reads to her. There are a number of pictures depicting each color - we simply ad the name of the color before each picture: red cherries, red car, red flower, etc. So much better than having just one picture of each color! You cannot go wrong with this book.

I purchased the shapes one originally in a store and really liked it. I found a whole bunch more in the series and can't wait to get them all and expand the collection. They are simple and have lots of examples throughout the book.

I have always loved all DK books. I bought them for my kids and now buying for my grandchildren. Beautiful pictures.

Great book! It has helped me a lot with teaching my 18-month-old about colors.Almost every color is featured on 2 double page spreads (some on just 2), with a variety of objects in that color. It helps the child understand that what they have in common is the color, which works a lot better than books that try to cram several colors in one page.Highly recommended.

My toddler enjoys this book, and I think it's visually appealing with a beautiful layout. A couple of edits I would suggest for next edition, though, such as making the coins silver (not gold), getting rid of the orange ice pop (replacing it with a healthy food) and changing the red poppy into a more ordinary flower (like a rose). But overall, great and relevant introduction to color categories.

Awesome book- our baby loves this line of books for some reason, but he is only 7 months old. Each page has groups of items that are all the same color- goes through basic colors, brown, black + white, and rainbow.

Good book but I hate that they clump blank and white together
