Part of my dissatisfaction with this book was my fault too, as I thought it was going to be a little more radical than it is.However I was dissappinted reading this because the ideas are simply not very creative: buy better windows, buy better fridge, buy better this, buy better that. But it never REALLY gave creative solutions. The ideas sre still based on moving the economy and production, which is inherently unsustainable. The title is misleading, as the ideas presented wouldn't really save the Earth, but rather just reduce damage. Instead of giving ideas that would lessen our dependence on energy in general, or replace technologies/designs with alternatives (example: alternative storing methods for cooling, rather than buying a product). It doesn't teach the recycling of products, or explain why a lot of designs are simply fundamentally flawed (example: buy new windows/insulation instead of explaining why modern conventional homes are inefficiently built to retain a homeostasis temperature).However its partially my fault, because if I would have looked at the title and realized what is implied by "Consumer Guide".Overall, this book does a good job helping you be a more efficient consumer, but don't expect to be causing any waves of inspiration with the advice provided here. If you're interested in saving maybe a few dollars, but still living within the safety of you're conventional lifestyle, this book is for you. However if your REALLY looking to save money, and save the Earth, you will be either dissappointed by this book, or lying to yourself. Psst, I found much better information online for free.So be a more efficient consumer and save your money by not buying this book! Lol

About the Author

Born in Rwanda in 1956, Scholastique Mukasonga experienced from childhood the violence and humiliation of the ethnic conflicts that shook her country. In 1960, her family was displaced to the polluted and under-developed Bugesera district of Rwanda. Mukasonga was later forced to flee to Burundi. She settled in France in 1992, only two years before the brutal genocide of the Tutsi swept through Rwanda. In the aftermath, Mukasonga learned that 37 of her family members had been massacred. Her first novel, Notre-Dame du Nil, won the Ahmadou Kourouma prize and the Renaudot prize in 2012, as well as the 2013 Océans France Ô prize, and the 2014 French Voices Award, and was shortlisted for the 2016 International Dublin Literary award. In 2017 memoir Cockroaches was a finalist for the LA Times Charles Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose. About the translator: Jordan Stump received the 2001 French-American Foundation's Translation Prize for his translation of Le Jardin des Plantes by Nobel Prize winner Claude Simon. In 2006, Stump was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He has translated the work of Eric Chevillard, Marie Redonnet, Patrick Modiano, Honoré de Balzac, and Jules Verne, among others. He is a professor of French literature at the University of Nebraska.

I thought this book would be all about war and killing and famine or the like. Yes, there's some mention of that, but this book is mostly about culture. The author describes life as a refugee. What was it like to grow up a Tutsi? What were the traditions in Rawanda? How was it in the settlements? What changed? I would not think of this as a children's book. Not that children can't read it. I just wouldn't recommend it for young children. There is mention of violence and rape, but nothing graphic. The translation from French was excellent.The only thing I found odd was the Amazon book description did not mesh with what I read in that it is not from the point of view from the mother. It is from that of the child. It is the child's voice. Even though she reveres her mother, it is mostly about her observations about the world around her.

It started in 1963, long before most of us in the West had probably even heard of Rwanda, but Scholastique Mukasonga's family was forced out from their traditional villages after "the bloody reprisals." She was just a a young girl at the time, but her memories are clear in telling of what life was like in this new place they had all been removed to. Just as vivid are the details of that life "back in Rwanda" (even though they remained in the country, just "on the other side of the river), a life that she was really never a part of, because her mother told and retold the stories and traditions that were now forever lost.Here is life where bread is so scarce it is seen as a medicine, to be purchased when nothing else will help cure a sick child. Here is the interweaving of the white cultures new ways and devices with the traditions that included chants and herbs and a long history of a much simpler life. The author shares with us some of the details of this refugee life, writing beautifully of what it is like to not even know what you look like because there are no mirrors. "Your only mirror was other people: your mother's admiring glances or sighs of distress, your big sister's or schoolmates' observations and appraisals, and then the village chatter. which would inevitably end up finding its way to you: who's beautiful? who's not?"There are a few places where there is a foreshadowing of the horrors to come, brief comments like this reference: "these were the beneficent Mothers, the benevolent Mothers, the ones who fed, protected, counseled, and consoled, the guardians of the family and the community, the ones the killers slaughtered as if to wipe out the very soruces of life." Beyond this, however, The Barefoot Woman is entirely a picture of life in a struggling community of families stripped of their traditional homes and finding a way to build lives for their families as best they could.It is impossible to read this without holding in the back of one's mind the fearful killings that were to come after the time period covered in this slim volume, but perhaps that is for the best. This is a gentle tale, a fond rememberance of growing up even in terribly difficult circumstances, making the horrific outcomes (that we know only from reading the comments on the back cover) even more troubling because now we know these people. This book is not quite what I expected, in a good way. I've read multiple memoirs from survivors of the Rwanda genocide and figured this would be in that similar vein. It's not.Instead, Mukasonga gives a very short (146 pages, but very small pages--4"x6" instead of the standard book size pages) tribute to her mother and her mother's devotion to Rwanda and Rwanda traditions and customs. It's not a traditional narrative with a standard plot. Rather it's a collection of vignettes and stories from Mukasonga's life growing up that focus on her mother and illustrate traditions she grew up with. Also, most of the book takes place in the mid-1960s, though she never gives a specific year. There is one mention of the genocide of the 90s in the book (in a small section on coming to terms with rape, and a few mentions of specific violence to come (the massacres of 1967). Despite the lack of specific historic event, and even while focusing on general life, Muskasonga makes the constant fear and threat of violence her family and all the Tutsis in their village lived with known.I enjoyed the book on several levels. First, I found it interesting to learn about Rwandan customs and traditions-- the reverence for the cow, the importance of medicinal plants, the communal importance, the definitions/standards of beauty. Mukasonga details all of this, and her mother's reverence and respect for these traditions, in fact, it seems the point of the book.Second, I thought it was very interesting how the book is set in 1960s. I think for most people unfamiliar with Rwanda, people only know of the genocide of '94, not the violent history that permeated much of the 20th century. In this book, Mukasonga and her family are "refugees" driven from their homes in the verdant hills to a dry, arid part of the country. (I only put refugees in quotes because the author and the characters in the book refer to the family as refugees. Technically, "internally displaced people," since they didn't cross an international border. Not that being an IDP is any easier than being a refugee, frankly. Mukasonga's mother does not refer to their new home as a part of Rwanda, always referring to their past life "in Rwanda".) In their new home with other displaced Tutsis they are often harassed by soldiers and an encampment of Hutu political party young men nearby. Near the end there is a small section on rape and dealing with the aftermath. It seems in this one area is where tradition lost out, as traditionally raped women were shunned and any child of rape considered unlucky. With the increase in attacks from the soldiers and Hutu encampment, the people of the village devised a new tradition after the rape and resulting pregnancy of a young virtuous Tutsi girl.The events of the near past are never dealt with head on (except in the chapter the talks about rape. There Mukasonga directly talks about how rape was used as a weapon against the Tutsis.) There are few times when Mukasonga mentions the death that was to come (the most memorable for me was when she talked about her brother Antoine having 9 children, 7 sons and 2 daughters, and her mother was happy that with "so many sons, some will live to carry on the family name," and Mukasonga simply writes after that, "She was wrong." Very stark and simple, but it really got the point across. At the end, again, the references to the dead are oblique--she provides no list of friends and family lost, though she specifically mentions her friend, Candida, and her mother. Unlike other memoirs, there is no rumination on why the author survived and others didn't. No gruesome details on the atrocities. But it provides a perspective different from most of the other books I've read. In it's own way it's a very powerful little book.

Nice organiser! I'm finding it useful for tracking my spending and keeping on top of my finances. I'm loving the layout!

I purchased this to get my husband and I on a much better track to getting our spending in order and getting debt paid off once and for all. After spending some time perusing the numerous choices on Amazon, I settled on this book and I cannot be more happy! Sure, it takes some time in the beginning to work up your first budget, but, people, this is a GOOD THING. It made me really take the time to look at our spending overall, and then the pages which have you fill in your daily spending have already opened my eyes and have me excited to be on the road to more financial freedom!So, what's included:1. Each month has a budget for you to fill in. While I've only used it for January 2019 thus far, I like that I have the opportunity to update the budget for February, March, etc, as this is what I want as we intend to tweak as we become more aware of where our money is going.2. Each month has a space for you to fill in your daily spending, with a description and a total. It's 8 days over a 2-page spread. There is also an area for you to total what you spent in an entire week. At the end of the month is a page for you to reflect on what you've learned from tracking your spending for a month and to reflect on what you can do better. I think this is crucial for changing how we view our finances and spend our money.It's 12 months and you don't HAVE to begin in January -- as the awesome quote says in the beginning of the book, if you're beginning in another month, just start there and return to January when you get there! It's not dated which is helpful as well. There is a ton of room to easily write and the paper is good quality; it stood up to me erasing the same areas over and over.Bottom line: if you're looking to get on and stick to a budget, as well as look for ways to cut back on spending, I truly believe this is the book for you!

Nice layout. Very cumbersome to record that much detail. I teach a personal finance class at the college and I can say that I was considering making this book a required buy. But I couldn’t even keep up with it for a full month. But the monthly budget and monthly recap are really nice features. I’d say it would be better to eliminate all the “days” and keep one large spending diary for the week.

This book requires that I make a budget, take the time out to (honestly) write down my daily spending, calculate my weekly totals and track my spending throughout the month. Every time I write in this book I feel shame. There is something different about looking at an app and seeing my spending vs forcibly writing it down doing the math. The name of the book makes complete sense because that is EXACTLY what I tell myself I need to do everytime I close it.This may be me just being picky by I do wish it were hardcover, or had a more durable make. If not left on a shelf all the time, it will fall apart over the course of 12 months. I also wish I'd known it started in January. I bought the book in September so began 75% in and will work my way to the front and back down again, which is awkward.But this books serves the purpose it is meant to, and that is what's most important.

Pretty disappointed that the months are already calculated and dated in the book, but otherwise it’s a good tool to have. Definitely well organized and makes budget planning a breeze. Again just wish it wasn’t already dated. Not sure how I’m going to make it work now considering it starts in January and it’s september now. February has 29 days so I’m going to have to figure out how to draw two more in somehow. Womp womp.

This budget planner has allowed me to see where my money is going and also show me where I can cut back on expenses that are unnecessary. Those starbuck runs and eating out can add up more than I realized. Plus forcing me to write down each day what've I've spent makes me really think if what I'm getting is a need or just a want.

It gives you a guideline and a monthly/weekly budget planner to use but it limits you with your options of what charges go where and assumes you have family costs. I used it for the first few weeks after purchase but have not used it since. I switched to a google doc template. Save your money and do the same.

This book has helped us to create a meaningful budget and put our spending into perspective. Love what it has done for us!

I have read a great many books on amateur astronomy and the necessary equipment needed to provide good views. Unfortunately I have often came away disappointed. This is because most such books are written with the beginner in mind. As such there is minimal space is afforded to the technical side of the hobby.This book is different. For one thing, the author has chosen a specific area of the hobby (eyepieces) and he stays on topic.He starts with a nice intro, discussing eyepiece basics such as how they are made, the different types, various configurations, and possible problems such as distortion.Having set that foundation, he then divides the eyepiece by their important characteristics, primarily the field of view that each provides.Finally, the writer lists a majority of all eyepieces under their manufacturers and in alphabetical order. He also provides the specifications when available. Included are a liberal number of illustrations and pictures, that are well placed, providing support for the text.This is the most comprehensive treatment of this subject I seen in print. And for that reason alone makes the book to be worth the price paid.The auther’s knowledge is easily displayed and is of such extent the reader finds it easy trust him. By the end of the book, there is no doubt that the writer knows of what he is writing.In all areas this is a well made book. It is nice looking, well organized, and though technology deep, nicely written. This is a good addition to anyone’s personal library and a must have reference.

For beginners and long time hobbyists.Finding the best eyepiece that fits your needs to view the universe through a telescope is essential.The oculars come in so many sizes with different field of views, eye relief, coatings, etc, it can be quit daunting to find the ones that meet your needs. This book can save you a lot of money or make you spend it on premium oculars, if you want the best. This bookcontains years of acquried information at your fingertips. The ocular oem's can mislead you via their advertisements, by not telling you the whole picture. My favorite part is on page 175'Some tips on viewing the Universe through an eyepiece. My little contribution.

This book, along with Choosing and Using Astronomical Filters, should be an essential part of any amateur astronomer's reference library. It will help cut through the noise from marketers and the "advice" from colleagues, putting in your own hands the tools you need to make informed decisions about whether or not you need to spend a small fortune on this or that eyepiece. If you are an amateur astronomer and don't have this book, get it. You'll be glad you did.

Written in a clear organized style, omitting virtually no aspect of astronomical eyepieces. This book is a comprehensive, excellent guide to choosing and using eyepieces for visual observation. Indispensable! Great drawings and photos. Highly recommended. Paolini has done a superb service to educate the amateur observer.

This is a good book for Miley fans, although most of information in book most fans may already know from reading teen magazines which is loaded with Miley info. And this book sometimes quote directly from the magazines that had stories or interview before. Could use more photos, but again, all those teen mags have alot of photos. Most Miley fans read the teen mags, and this book is for those kids.

its okay I guess good reading book

We bought this book for our daughter who is a fan of Hannah Montanna. It was definitely a hit and she has had a lot of enjoyment from it.

When I purchased this book, I expected to learn something about Miley that I didn't know, but it just borrowed everything from magazines I've previously read, and talked about the history of Miley's hometown, which was a waste of space. A lot of the information is not even correct. For example, it says that her mom is dead, which has been disproved by Miley herself on numerous accounts. So all I really got from this book was the history of Franklin, Tenessee, Billy Ray Cyrus's life story, and 20 pages of astrological junk.

My daughter LOVES this book. She was so excited when she opened it on Christmas day! She has already read it twice & her sister has read it once. Great purchase!
