Every since the events of DARK KNIGHTS: METAL and NO JUSTICE, the rules of the DC Universe have changed under the guidance of Scott Snyder at the helm with his JUSTICE LEAGUE series. The Dark Multiverse busting through and breaking The Source Wall has changed the rules of just anything for the current climate of the DC comics, spinning out into two other JL main titles DARK and ODYSEEY, with writers James Tynion IV doing DARK and Joshua Williamson on ODYSEEY. While Snyder’s JL series is a bit to in-coherent for my taste, ODYSEEY has Cyborg leading his own team into space, Tynion gets to write the more magic/occult side of the DC universe and it looks to be the best of the three series.JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK VOL.1: THE LAST AGE OF MAGIC collects issues #1-3 of “The Last Age of Magic”, issue #5 and #6 of “The Shadow Pact” and issue #7 does four small stories. After the events of NO JUSTICE, the Tree of Wonder is still planted on Earth and that doesn’t sit well with Wonder Woman, who senses magic isn’t working like it used to as its turning on various witches and wizards into deformed monsters. So Wonder Woman is trying to round up members of the magic community to fight and understand this new threat, but the magic world deals with these problems within their own circle (that’s a big no-no to Wondy.) Only a select few people of the occult world finally see the threat known as The Otherkind, the true source throughout the DC Universe of the most powerful and darkest magic freed from the Source Wall. Those members join Wonder Woman’s Dark team including Man-Bat, Detective Chimp, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine.James Tynion’s past work on Detective Comics gave him plenty of practice of a team book and he handles this extremely well checking the boxes in balance of action, horror, character moments, flashbacks, and some surprise turns along the way. I’ve always thought Wonder Woman straddled the magic spectrum considering her origin, so it’s awesome she’s in charge of a team and focused around magic, with Zatanna being second-in-command. The dynamics are on point with Wonder Woman as the strong leader, Zatanna being a mediator of knowledge, Man-Bat using his scientific/grounded approach, Swamp thing being the elemental guardian of the planet, and Detective Chimp being the wise-cracking comic relief. And of course, Constantine is here because Tynion wrote his solo series during the DCYou period and as a call-back to being the leader of the team in the NEW52 era, though he makes way more sense in the context of this book over that. John isn’t listed as a member of the team, as you see he’s not on most of the covers, but he plays such a large part supporting the team he’s pretty much an un-official member. Tynion juggles the team and I love the weirdness about it.Let’s also talk about the big bad her: The Otherkind. These guys are legit scary as hell as they infest magic users contorting their bodies into mashed up sack of meat akin to John Carpenter’s The Thing. It’s grotesque to see the horror happening And it’s all lead by The Upside-Down Man, a scaly-white humanoid being who is not only hunger to eat up magic, but massively powerful to take on anyone. There’s always an unsettling vibe here with these guys and it works, even more so because of how ambitious tale Tynion is writing here with The Otherkind. This is especially prevalent in issue #7 an anthology issue where every team member gets a few pages fighting the Otherkind told from the perspective of Man-Bat narratoring it to the reader like ghost stories (with some surprise, obscure occult DC figures mixed in.) The issue was released around Halloween, so that would explain the vibe, but its brilliant in keeping the horror tone, continuously building up The Otherkind as universal threats, and team building.Tynion collaborator Detective artist Alvaro Martinez Bueno does “The Last Age of Magic” arc and issue #7. I’ve really come to appreciate his art work over the years as being a decent fill-in artist for Eddy Barrows, yet he has come along way since then. His story telling and artwork is top notch without being confusing or odd. His overall dark designs fit this series to a T in tone and conveying dread. Daniel Sampere does issues “The Shadow Pact” issues who is another excellent fill-in artist that I hope stays on the series when Martinez Bueno can’t finish issues.While I do love this series and the characters, there still are a few problems to be had here and, they are akin to Tynion’s previous work on Detective. Tynion makes certain changes that I feel are out of character at times to fit the story. As a fan of these characters, you might cringe at moments like that. Like Detective Chimp not really doing any forensic work and mostly comedic relief, Man-Bat being pseudo-human/bat looking and carefree, and one major DC hero who I personally consider in my top 5 favorite heroes ever who looks like a bigger villain in the making than the Otherkind in volume 2. It’s nerve-racking as Tynion’s done this before, but I know he has ways to make it all come around in the end on a solid note. Tynion also continues his habit of overwriting at times, filling word balloons to overstuff pages with grander and built. It only works if occasional, yet, he does it just about every issue. His mentor and teacher, Scott Snyder, does it way too often as well. Guys, just ease off describing everything on page. This isn’t a typical book where you have to describe every detail; it’s a comic book. Let the art tell part of the story.Second, after reading Jason Aaron’s Doctor Strange run back in 2016, I can’t help but feel Tynion’s story is very close to Aaron’s. The same overall idea is there: Magic isn't working right, magic has a cost if used, and magic is going to die because the villains are based around it. Heck, even the titles are near identical. Aaron’s Doctor Strange title was “The Last Days of Mgic” and Tynion’s “The Last Age of Magic”are pretty close. I’m sure it’s merely coincidental. Beyond the theme, everything else is different.Finally, you will notice issue #4 is not here. Why? Because it’s part of the crossover event “The Witching Hour” with Wonder Woman. I thought as a rule of thumb was to not introduce a crossover this early in any series, especially a new one. It muddles everything up! Series should only crossover after 20 issues as to let it build the world and its characters. But, someone thought it was a cool idea to make from the get! *sigh* Any who, I can see where DC management probably had a nightmare to figure how to collect this series as no real way would have done the trick. It would have worked either way for JLD volume 1 to include the first three issues and the entire “Witching Hour” sans issues #5-#7 material would have sufficed just fine. I do think what is collected here in volume one is workable, surprisingly. “The Witching Hour” doesn’t affect the outcome of the series that much actually, so that is a positive. Though why would DC release “The Witching Hour” two months away is beyond me.JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK VOL.1: THE AGE OF MAGIC is a solid opening volume from James Tynion IV and Alvaro Martinez Bueno. It hits all the buttons of a solid team book in action, suspense, horror, lore building, and every character getting their moments to shine. It does hit a few hiccups because “The Witching Hour” isn’t here, Tynion’s habits of out-of-character moments, over writing, and that one particular DC Hero going villain ticks me off. Yet…I still loved it. I loved the art, the story, the team dynamics, and I do want to see where it goes.

James tynion got my attention with his writing in detective comics. The way he wrote clayface in that book was amazing so I decided to give this book a shot, and we’ll hot damn! This book is everything I could’ve ask for and more! Amazing book with great art. Definitely can’t wait for Vol 2 of this.

Surprised by how great this book is. Great writing and fantastic art! Can't wait for more, by far my current favorite comic on shelves.

The main theme is that Michael Cairne finally comes into his abilities.It sets up the plot for a very interesting follow up that I look forward to.

Wow another awesome tale from Gultch. Each page has me on the edge of my seat. I love that the story is not predictable. Most stories i can see where the story is heading but not this story. Love the real life situations these people face and there emotions.

Acclaimed biographer, Jean Fritz, was born in China to American missionaries on November 16, 1915. This book was for an extra credit book report for my son. This was his extra project for the month of April. What a nice book. It is accurate,& informative, but the way Jean Fritz presents the information she keeps a childs attention. My third grader was entertained while he learned something new. The illustrations added to the content without being a distraction. We read the book together, and I was so impressed with Jean Fritz that I plan on buying another book by her.

I wanted to learn to make food of Hawaiian influence. I found it in this perfect book from Honolulu. The recipes seemed intimidating at first, but after trying the Pineapple duck I am hooked. Love the mesh of flavors, and soon I will be trying the asparagus recipe as it reads so delicious.This book is not simply another cook book. In meaning that it goes from traditional appetizer, drinks, dinners and desserts. It also has a luau section for any day of the week. I would recommend this book to anyone trying Hawaiian cuisine for the first time. This book will go into your collection not leaving the shelf, but remaining on the counter ready for the next meal.

I've had this cookbook for 20 years - I wore it out so I got a new one. I have given it as gifts many, may times. It is absolutely wonderful.

Lori is bait for creatures called “feeders,” which prey on humans. Her partner is Handler, who eats the ones she traps. What are either of them, really? For that matter, what are the feeders? When Lori runs afoul of the Lake Foundation by freeing a group of supernatural teenagers, the lure becomes the prey and time is running out fast for Lori and her new friends.Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Weekes pulled the rug out from under me again. (Sort of like playing a Dragon Age game.) This is a fascinating and well-told story with compelling characters; I was particularly taken with Iara and with heroine Lori herself. The relationships between Lori and the Nix are believable, and I laughed out loud more than once at their interactions. Handler is also really well done, and thoroughly likable, and the antagonist is chilling. I had a really difficult time putting this down. It’s a quick read, perfect for an evening’s hot bath or a lazy afternoon, but the story itself is going to stay with you for a long time once you’re finished.

So I preordered this thinking it was a more of an adult book. It's really more for teenage readers, but it's still very good and I enjoyed it (I'm in my 20s). I would also HIGHLY recommend for teenage readers since it has LGBT+ characters that aren't one dimensional (like so many others...) or have their differences be the main focus of their character. I would have LOVED to have a book like this growing up. My teenage self would have been smitten. It's well paced, has good action, and the dialogue is realistic (most of the time).ONE CON: I really didn't like some of the references, like the age-old "sub v dub" argument, I know the author was probably trying to make the characters sound younger, but it came off forced. This isn't enough for me to drop a star though.

There are books that have interesting plots, books that have awesome characters, books with lots of inclusivity, books with some unexpected twists.And there are books that have something important to say"Feeder" is all of the above, but especially the latter.It's hard to say what I liked most about it without jumping into spoilers, but it was one of the most diverse novels I've read in a while (and I've read very diverse ones!). You will definitely find one-two characters to fall in love with (and maybe all of them!), you will be mindblown by some concepts (I mean, it's Patrick Weekes, this is the least you can expect from him) and you will be touched by some moments and heartbroken over others."We are all in different places on our shared journey, and we might get there late.But we'll get there together."

This book totally blew me away. I had added it to my wishlist a while ago, and when I got around to reading it, I wasn't sure what I'd be getting into. I'm so glad I read this book! It hit all my boxes and really challenged me emotionally.This book takes place in a future where water has risen, and the main character Lori (described by the author as an "angler fish superhero") goes around finding inter-dimensional parasites to deliver to an unfathomable being with super big teeth. What she finds instead that kicks off the book's plot are five teenagers with superpowers, and lots of snark. Lori decides to work together with these teenagers, who all have really interesting powers and backstories, and fight against something big lurking underneath their water world.The characters in this book displayed such a wide range of diversity in many different sections that made me so happy! They had such different personalities and spoke in unique ways. They felt really fleshed out and were fun to be around! And their superpowers were really cool too.All in all I loved this book, it definitely was a book for me, and I highly recommend it if you like mysteries, mythology, superpowers, and aquatic animals. And Pokemon! Did you know this book canonically takes place during the time period when Pokemon X&Y the anime was airing in the US? Well it does!!! Go read it!

Patrick Weekes has a gift for writing lovable monsters.In his latest novel, he's chosen denizens of the deep to play with, in a fascinating horror/YA adventure that leaves just enough room for a sequel. (Hint. Hint.)I've read all his other books for the pure joy of where he takes me. I've followed him through magic mirrors, on board elven flying ships, and into battles, and now to the bottom of a bay to investigate miracoral's mysteries. It doesn't matter if they are through BioWare or independent, his ability to weave a tale and drag you off to see where you'll find yourself next is captivating. I'd give it 10/5 if Amazon would let me.He's a master of worldbuilding. Buy his books. All of them.

I loved everything about this story. The characters are diverse and believable and I found myself growing attached to them. Weekes has a knack for dialogue that leaves me snickering behind my hand, or ready to fight someone in their face, or ugly crying into my shirt. The book is geared toward teens, but I think anyone who loves a good, action-packed story and has maybe felt like it was hard work to "fit in" will enjoy it as well.

I was hooked at the very beginning: Chapter One. The writer is a clever guy and gets you to turn pages with speed and curiosity. Love the characters -each well developed and prompts you to read quickly. I flew to NYC and could not put it down.

A good book with fun surprises, I would definitely recommend the read. I wish there was a bit more exposition at the start because I struggled to get a sense for what was going on for the first few chapters, but the characters were interesting and the plot pretty cool. Also to be fair, the sense of 'what is going on, exactly?' sort of plays into a layered reveal that I thought was particularly well executed.

Great book

Classic, nostalgic recipes fill this cookbook. The hardcover, spiral binding is a nice touch. Enjoy classics like Artichoke Dip, Green Goddess Salad, Poached Salmon, Christmas Cheese Balls, Shortbread, Ceasar Salad, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Whether you are cooking for a Holiday Brunch, Cocktail Party, Buffet, Potluck, Sit-Down Dinner or just using up leftovers, you are sure to find something here. I used the Cranberry Muffin recipe substituting milk for the orange juice and Chopped strawberries for the cranberries. My kids demolished them! The cookbook ends with a section on Food Gifts. This is a lovely chapter of Candied Almonds, Spiced Pecans, Cranberry Pistachio Bark, Toffee, Marmalade, Chutney and more. The "Novel Nuts" were a huge hit at the family Christmas dinner!This is a great, nostalgic cook that is great fun to read through and to cook from.I received a copy of this cookbook from Robert Rose, Inc. for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When a group of ladies gets together for bridge, it’s always a great time to bring delicious food and swap recipes. These ladies turned their favorites into a cookbook. The food in it reminds me of the foods I ate as a child at family and church get-togethers. The ladies’ motto is “Simple recipes with gourmet results” and I can tell these are the kind of recipes that are hard to make them wrong. It also has a lay-flat binding and large text which makes it really easy to see and read while cooking. I had turkey left over from Thanksgiving so I made the Quick Turkey Curry, which their addition of mango chutney made it really good. Since it’s holiday time, I also made the Good Old-Fashioned Gingerbread which was baked in a loaf pan. I sliced it and topped it with a lemon sauce and whipped cream, yum! Lots of good recipes and I also really enjoyed their fun and funny sayings that are the end of each recipe!

Finally a spiral bound cook-book with large print and clearly outlined recipes where the pages lay flat and allow the busy gourmand easy reading. This collection of holiday recipes is the latest addition to the Best of Bridge recipe series which emphasizes holiday preparations and treats. Following their mottoes of ‘simple recipes with gourmet results” the inclusions from casual to festive will tickle the taste buds. Recipes are included for buffet parties, brunches, traditional holiday meals, special Christmas and New Year’s Eve banquets and includes dishes for the vegetarians at the table. Unfortunately, no gluten-free instructions are included. Especially nice for this festive season are the sections on desserts, cookies, and food gifts. I especially want to try the Tiger Butter made with melted white and dark chocolate mixed with peanut butter. Variations of many of these recipes can be found in other cookery books, but it is nice to have a concentrated holiday collection at hand. While the pages are filled with many colored illustrations of the completed cuisines, the harsh brassy colors of the illustrations diminish the attractiveness of the recipes.

We love this cookbook! It's filled with recipes you need for holiday entertaining. This cookbook is great because it has tried and true recipes that will be a lifesaver come holiday time when you simply don't have time to test out recipes. I already have tried a few recipes ( Pomegranate and Feta Salad...amazing) and I'm hooked! It will be my go-to book this holiday season.
