Really enjoyed this tape series. Have studied in school for years and have lived in Japan for a year and am always looking for (inexpensive) ways to keep up my Japanese. The format and content was just right. Also learned new vocabulary, as well. Level 3 was even better for me but this was also good.

I'm preparing for my trip back to Japan, and thought these tapes would help me remember what I was fluent in as a child, so I skipped the first edition.I listened to level 2 tapes a few times, and after not recognizing the words they were saying, and then realizing they were using phrases I'd never use, for example "i am not your friend", I figured out I bought the wrong tapes.The phrases are said in English first, and then in Japanese, but the Japanese is so fast that you don't have a chance to mimic the sentence, and if you do, you don't know how to break down the meaning of each part of the sentence. Maybe I should have bought level 1, but I really don't think I need to learn how to say things they were trying to teach.I bought the 1993 version of Henry N. Raymond's cassettes, but I'm not sure the current version is any different!I've since found a great book for beginners called Japanese in 10 Minutes a Day. It is easy to learn, fun, and really does take 10 minutes a day!

There is an art to making a language learning course interesting and engaging. The art was lost on this course although it still does a decent job of teaching with lots of repetition.

The pictures used are exquisite, and will assuredly pique the interests of the interested even further. Aesthetically, this work is quite pleasing.While the intended scope of this book wasn't fine art criticism and appreciation, it wouldn't have hurt to have included some of each. The photos of puppetory productions used point conclusively to an author who has likely mastered these loftier concepts. To close the circle, some commentary about why certain productions have excelled would have been welcomed, as opposed to discussing only technical pitfalls. Unlike presentational theater, puppetry is far more technical in nature, but it is a fine art medium also and more of its practitioners should have the initiative to promote it as such.One of the best primers currently available, but it begs for a new edition.

About the Author

Pay attention to the product dimensions! I assumed this was the size of a typical hardcover children's picture book. It's not. The book itself is fine and I don't have a problem with anything other than I don't think it's made clear in the product description what you're actually ordering. When it says "hardcover," I would think most people assume it's an average-sized hardcover book, not a mini version of it. Just wanted people to be aware in case the size matters to you. In my case, it DID matter because I bought this for reading aloud to a large group of preschoolers, and they aren't going to be able to see the pictures very well because it's so small.

I am very disappointed in this product. The main attraction was the seed-embedded paper 'included' in the book......the paper was NOT included. I ordered 2 books for my grandchildren's birthdays to go with gardening items. It was going to be lots of fun to plant the seeds and watch them grow. I guess I'll have to go purchase seeds separately even though inside the front cover and on the back of the book it mentions the 'detachable' seed paper. Grammie Mc

Sweet book! My daughter enjoys reading it. It is a great visual for the life cycle of plants.Adapted for a ready-to-read, level two book, this Eric Carle classic will not only challenge children with developing reading skills but it also follows the journey of a seed from the time the autumn winds take it aloft until it lands and eventually sprouts into a mature plant. You'll love the bright, vibrant illustrations and descriptive text here. This is an excellent, joyful reader with a story that explains how plant seeds are spread and then grow into mature plants. Excellent!

The story was cute, but I thought this was a board book!? That is how it was listed. This was actually only a hard covered book and the very thin pages ripped the first time reading it. The seeds that came with it was a cute touch. The book was smaller than I would have expected. I ended up giving this to an older child as my son is too young for this delicate book.

Nice book. I felt it was a little above my 2 year old but he listened through most of it, talked about what was going on in the pictures and was excited to pick out seeds and plant them.

This is a short book with cute drawings and the whole book is dedicated to the life of a tiny seed. Highly recommended for young kids!

I’m using this in my Sunday school class room for fall planting. This book goes thru all seasons which covers all bases. It’s a little long for the younger age group I teach but they loved it.

It is incredibly TINY!! I never thought to look at the dimension thinking no such size and font could possibly exist to be legible!!! Also, I love the author and thought to add this to our collections.. but this story is too dark for a 3 and 5 year old from what I could make with a magnifying glass.

I'd give it ten stars! Anyone interested in writing, arranging, composing, orchestrating, or just a curious musician should own a copy of this book.It covers over 150 instruments giving the general/practical range as written and transposed, plus it gives the tonal/dynamic qualities of each register and where they might be used (e.g.each string on stringed instruments, chalumeau/throat/clarino on clarinet). It covers general information about each instrument (construction, special attachments, general considerations).It covers technical considerations with specific characteristics for each instrument to help you avoid writing something a player would consider stupid (e.g. low B-Bb slide positions on trombone, low C-Db trill on flute). It also has scoring hints for each and within their families.It covers all sorts of articulations/mutes/effects etc, what they sound like, where to use them and how to write them (e.g. velvotone mute/'doit' articulation for trumpet, flutter tonguing on flute, string technics). Also, there is information on harmonics for stringed instruments and pedal tones for trombones, french horns et al.It has an amazing section on percussion instruments. Composers have always looked like idiots to a percussionist because they hadn't the slightest idea how to write for them. You will know how if you use the info in this book (and be admired by the 'battery').In short, if this book sold for $200, it would be worth it. At $100 it would be a bargain. BUT at 6 bucks, why haven't you bought it already??p.s. while a bit confusing a first to find an instrument, however, with about five minutes of use you will understand the reasons for the arrangement of material in the book by families (you would not want a coronet at the front and trumpet at the back of a book). The table of contents explains it. Plus there is an alphabetical listing of instruments with page #'s at the back of the book.

Excellent pocket reference for orchestral instrument scoring, with ranges (typical, extended, options, etc.), transpositions, dynamics, tonality, pedal tones, scoring tips (avoiding weak notes; difficult jumps & trills, etc.) and explanations on each instrument's basic operational principles as they apply to composing & scoring.

This is an excellent little book (and I do mean LITTLE... the book has a wealth of information, but it's tiny, like pocket-sized!) to reference when creating film scores or other orchestrations. The instruments are grouped together for ease of navigation (e.g., percussion, stringed instruments, horns, reeds, etc.). The book details the ACTUAL range and the SOUNDED range of each instrument, and it has some really uncommon/bizarre instruments listed! It's really nice that the sounded range is included, as instruments vary in timbre and thus play in a different register, so the same note on the same staff can sound different. I use this book frequently when I'm writing various orchestrated sections of film scores. Use this as a reference book only. It doesn't go much further than that. Quite worth the money!

I am an Artist by training, and most of my musical understanding has been self-taught. Inyhoo... I have learned more about music notation, composition, orchestration, and theory, from these 3 little books than from any other similar resource!!!! They are very “User-Friendly” and when used together, become a really awesome reference book!!!

This is a book about doing natural hot tubbing.....its fun! It does not cover all the possibilities/locations that are available but it does get you to the standard known places. With info about each local.

It is great in terms of what you can find in Montana and Wyoming, less what is available at the Yellowstone National Park, which is a bit odd to read. Did not like any of the recipes.

I love, love, love this book! Many of the recipes are simple to make and give a break from the Standard American Diet recipes. Gordon takes traditional recipes like mousaka and curries to a refined level, but still easy to create. I highly recommend this!

Love this cookbook. Gordon does a great job of describing cooking techniques the average person wouldn't have thought about any other way. Squeezes in recipes wherever he can (i.e. Five ways with steak, five ways with pizza). The recipes go all over the world, literally. From Great Britain to the US, down to India and China. Definitely recommend this one.

Recipes (at least the ones I've tried out) worked out well. Clear instructions for most parts on how to handle each of the key ingredients.
