It's nearly impossible to gather any coherent meaning from this disorganized mess of short writings. The author meanders all over the map (literally), shifting from broad generalizations to discursive observations about minutiae. I have no idea where he is heading or what he even proposes to be explaining. There is no justification of the title. If you removed the title and just read the book, you would call it "A collection of small thoughts about some battles between a lot of ancient tribes you haven't heard of, some kings whose names you can't pronounce, and the Egyptians."What is the meaning of these battles and snippets of historical interaction between these obscure people who live in places whose locations we are not certain about? Nobody knows the meaning. Certainly not this author.The title of this book is simply a lie. This is not the subject of the book. The book has no coherent subject. Go read Wikipedia and save your money.

[ I have edited this review to correct some flaws pointed out in comments. ]The other reviewers have already pointed out the book's many fine points; I agree with them that this is a book well worth reading. I had long thought that the Late Bronze Age Collapse was primarily due to the depredations of the Sea Peoples, and this book scotches that idea. Yes, the Sea Peoples played a part in it, but they may well have been just as much Effect as Cause. That is, their rampage may well have been induced by the same factors that brought down other cities.The real contribution of this book lies in the application of recent archaeological findings to the problem. Over the last few decades archaeologists have built up a steady compilation of data on the cities of the Late Bronze Age, and they have demonstrated that not all those cities were destroyed in wars. Some show evidence of having been wrecked by earthquakes; in others, the destruction is confined to the central palace and government facilities, suggesting that a popular revolt, not a foreign invasion, lay behind the destruction. Other sites, however, do show the kind of general destruction we'd expect from a victorious enemy.Especially important is the evidence they bring to bear showing that some sort of regional climate change was responsible for the at least some part of the collapse. The evidence indicates a cooler, dryer climate which would have been devastating to the cereal crops on which civilizations are dependent. The cooler climate would have led to repeated famines that would have led to revolts, migrations, and wars - all of which appear in the record of this period.However, there are two points on which I disagree with the author. The first is the author's decision not to organize the causal factors into some sort of logical pattern. Instead, he declares that all of the factors (climate change, poor harvests, migration, civil disturbance, and war) converged to create a "perfect storm" that destroyed Late Bronze Age civilization in the Near East. That struck me as overly conservative.My second objection falls on the assumption that a collapse of international trade caused by the piratical depredations of the Sea Peoples added to the collapse. The author several times refers to an 'international system' of trade, likening it to modern globalization. He even goes so far as to suggest that the societies of that time had developed such intricate trade relationships that the disruption of those relationships helped undermine the societies.The problem arises when you think in terms of economic output. In all early societies, agricultural output constituted the vast majority of economic output. Sure, the historical records teem with stories of gems, spices, precious woods, and metals, but they attracted so much attention only because they were so rare. In terms of economic output, grain was far and away the most important component of all ancient societies. Indeed, in 1790, 90% of all laborers in the USA worked on farms. So let's keep our eyes on the ball here: grain.Trade in grain was rare and limited to emergency situations, because the transport systems of the Late Bronze Age were incapable of moving grain in bulk. The ocean-going ships of the day had cargo capacities of a few tens of tons. Grain was carried in heavy ceramic jars; a single ship could carry enough food to provide for at most a hundred people for a year. Land transportation was even worse: the inefficient wagons and poor roads of the day did not permit the carriage of large amounts of grain very far. After a few tens of miles, so much of the grain would have to go to feed the dray animals that there just wouldn't be much left at the destination.Thus, the disruption of trade would have denied rulers their luxuries, but would not have made much of a dent on the economy as a whole.A postscript to this review: the author of the book, Eric Cline, has graciously responded to my criticisms and finally gotten through my thick head a point that, while not mentioned in this review, came up in the exchange of comments. He has taken a lot of his time to straighten me out, and I deeply appreciate his patience with my errors.

It's a good book, one that fills in a significant gap that can often be seen in other books on the ancient Bronze Age societies. Cline is very, very careful to qualify findings, which makes a lot of sense but also gives the book a vague, indeterminate feel. The fact is that we just don't much about what happened, and the little we do know is not enough to actually construct a strong narrative on the events that led to all of these civilizations falling apart. So, at times, it led me to wonder why I was actually reading this book.I also find the name to be disingenuous. The year is chosen because that is when we "know" that Ramses III encountered the Sea Peoples in Egypt, but Cline spends a significant chunk of the book underplaying the role the Sea Peoples had in Bronze Age Collapse. In fact, sometimes it feels like he is underplaying the Bronze Age Collapse itself. He is quite quick to point out the cities that were re-populated, that did not suffer as much as first thought, and so forth. Yet he also doesn't, in my opinion, spend nearly enough time in Greece, as the destruction of the Myceneae civilization is much more total than the ones he does focus on. Then again, though, the information we would need to tell that story is just not there.However, these faults are outweighed by the fact that Cline paints a very, very good picture of what civilization was like at the time before the collapse. The picture he paints is one of, by all accounts, a very cosmopolitan, dynamic, lively society. It's where the vast majority of the book spends its time, and it's clear that is where Cline's interests lie. The problem is that the narrative is set up so that this is merely a prologue to the collapse, yet the way the collapse is soft-pedaled makes the whole thing feel more like a bait & switch. I would have happily read a book on Late Bronze Age civilization that was sold as such, but perhaps the publishers thought selling it as a gripping story of collapse would get more attention (and they were probably right).I do recommend this book, just don't go in expecting what the title and description says.

One of the best finance books I have ever read. It feels like you are a completely new person after reading this book. I didn't realize how much of a disadvantage I was at because I didn't know how to read balance sheets. I am a part-time positional trader and this book has opened my eyes and changed the way I look at companies. I will say it has definitely helped just a few days ago when I shorted $MU after reading their financials with what I learned by this book. Next 2 days the stock went down 11% because they had a very high debt to equity ratios and were highly over leveraged, two terms I didn't understand before this book.

Too many (parentheses) in a sentence which throws me off from the main point. Other than that, its an ok book.

A good basic primer written in an approachable style without being dumbed down. The writer gives good overview of Balance Sheet and Income Statement, discounting the relative importance of Cash Flow statement. Interesting discussion of aspects of financial statements that are subject to manipulation.

With a Bachelor's degree in marketing and finance and about 20 years of consulting for small and mid-sized businesses, I'm amazed at how many business owners and executives don't understand basic accounting. This book covers all you need to know about accounting to run a business and it's an easy read. Understanding the subject from Makoujy's perspective would have saved me much time and frustration in school and early in my career. The book provides accounting basics for novices and offers a great refresher for seasoned professionals. I recommend it highly.

This book is fine as it explains the intricacies of a company's balance sheet.

I wish I had this books years ago because not only was it chock full of information, but it was also written to be understood. Too often books on this subject become burdened with confusing terminology. I especially found the clear ,concise examples to be extremely helpful.Perhaps we should send free copies to all of our elected officials so they can understand more about long term liabilities and having a balanced balanced sheet. LOL. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a lot of useful information presented in a succinct, orderly way.

With no training or experience in accounting, and wanting to start my own business, I found this book extremely informative and relatively easy to understand. I'm sure those with more experience in accounting would find it somewhat simplistic but for me it was a great place to start.

I made a lot of research before buying this book and I must say I am very happy with it. Simple, practical and well organized. If you want to understand more about balance sheets this highly recommended.

I think the ideas such as "true sexual purity" and "bouncing the eyes" and tips on taking control of your thought process among others is worth the price of the book many times over.On the downside, the book unnecessarily reads like some soft porn novel when he describes in detail examples of his and others sins and temptations. Chapter one starts off on this note with such descriptions as "...two tiny triangles of tie-dyed fabric struggled to contain her ample bosom." and "My eyes feasted on this banquet of glistening flesh...". I pictured an AA meeting where the mentor describing a delicious and refreshing icy cold beer on a hot summer day. If they would write a G rated version I would feel comfortable recommending it to anyone.

Really wanted to like this book and take something from it. Instead, within the first ten pages of the book, one of the contributors gives his story but gives an exceeding amount of detail to his situation that readers, who are or once were addicts, will find triggersome, and likely will cause relapse. I read no further, so it possibly contains even more of this editing that is seemingly oblivious and ignorant of the situation it’s intended audience is in. I would highly recommend ‘pure desire’ as a very well thought out and enjoyable book for the purpose.

I expected the book to be more Scripture-heavy and less psychological. They make some very good points, but much of the advice is more behavior modification, rather than addressing the heart problems.The authors also have a habit of providing a bit too much description of their stories and scenarios, which is counterproductive given the point of the book.

Sorta disappointed in this book. I’ve read the book to help a friend who is struggling and hoping to give some great advice but although I did get some points to help them I feel the book is telling guys it’s ok to take out your sexual frustrations out with your wife! ! Your wife is not a puppet or doll to satisfy your every whim whether you think your being the best Christian or not! Meds are what you need whether you think so or not! Being a Christian or not if pornography is your problem shut it down...don’t use it on your wife ! Making love “with” your wife is what you should get from the Bible about your wife... not having “sex” with your wife because you have a sexual problem! I won’t read the other books.

NEVER would I have thought that I'd read let alone NEED to read a book like this, but we all fall short the glory. It is eye opening, uncomfortable and uneasy exploring our addiction to sexual content (magazines, internet, etc) and sins (strip joints, massages, hookers, masterbation) Begin the journey to understanding, Gods word, healing of yourself and rebuilding the trust between you and your partner.

I can't recommend this enough. Whether single or married, this book is essential if wanting to free yourself from sexual oppression or bondage.

This book will make excellent kindling. I would not let anyone else read this book because of how bad it is. I feel the book talks to much about the problems with the struggle and not about God’s grace and how to fix the problem. I think we get the fact that it’s a sin and something that needs to be corrected. They should not have spent the first half of the book explaining that in graphic detail.

I have a love / hate relationship with this book - on the pro side it's a gorgeous book. Full color, beautiful illustrations, a very unique and timeless look, that's also a handy size for you to tuck near your bar. There are also tons of recipes with fairly straightforward technique, though I find that many drinks either have an obscure ingredient or require you to make an ingredient (like a syrup or an infused spirit). It's great to page through and to use as inspiration, but I find it frustrating to actually use for making a drink at home all that often.What I really dislike about the book though is that it's not well organized in my opinion - the recipes are simply arrange alphabetically by name, which is to say, in an entirely random and arbitrary way. You can't easily say "I want to make something with gin" and easily pick something out from this book, and there's absolutely no index to help you either.

This is a good cocktail book if you're looking for a pure quantity of cocktails. The problem I have is that it suffers against others in its category, specifically the Dead Rabbit Cocktail book The Dead Rabbit Drinks Manual: Secret Recipes and Barroom Tales from Two Belfast Boys Who Conquered the Cocktail World and the Death and Co cocktail book Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails, with More than 500 Recipes, which for my money is the best cocktail book on the planet right now. The issue is one of organization. Both the DR and D&C cocktail books break down the recipes by either cocktail type (smashes, juleps, bishops, swizzles, flips, etc) or by ingredient (gin stirred, whisky shaken, Sazerac Variations, etc). This makes for fantastic mood-based recipe hunting. The PDT is simply alphabetical, albeit with an index at the back. I think this ultimately makes for good leisurely reading, but not necessarily convenient cocktail hunting. For instance, it's a chilly night on the northern California coast and I'm looking for a hot toddy. I started with PDT but gave up, however the Dead Rabbit literally has a Hot Toddy and a Bishop section.In short, it has a place on my cocktail shelf, but I don't find it indispensable.

My favorite cocktail books as of late are: 1. Death and Co. For innovative AND classic cocktails that are organized by liquor. 2. Dead Rabbit for having some demanding and time consuming drinks that will increase ones' repertoire. PDT is organized in any way and the drinks that are included can be found in any number of books. About ten days after ordering and not receiving the book (no blame here) I decided to see if the book was at my local library which it was. I checked it out and soon regretted buying it. I don't see it being a keeper to refer to.

I can't help but agree with some of the other reviews I've seen... This is an amazing resource that has been terribly organized. I could only take off 1 star for that given that the content itself deserves 10 stars, but seriously – you can't find anything in here unless you know the name of a drink you want to make in advance. I get they had to organize it somehow, and they may have a reason for not wanting to organize it by base spirit, but at least give us an index that isn't equally useless! Or provide access to an electronic version so it's searchable.Do try to get past that, though. The attention to detail in the craft cocktail recipes herein is incredible, and the illustrations are nothing short of beautiful works of art. Aside from how it's organized, the thing I've been looking for and can't find – and was hoping to find here – was more on the art of mixology itself. I was hoping for more of the art and science behind their creations, but I have to say, this is among the best cocktail recipe books I've ever seen.

Absolutely essential. An invaluable modern classic. The writing is engaging, practical and accessible to both professionals and home enthusiasts alike. The artwork is excellent. And the recipes have all been incredibly tasty and approachable thus far. I've borrowed friend's copies of the book and the past and admired it in stores for years, I'm so glad I finally just sucked it up and purchased my own. It's a great investment and addition to any cocktail nerd's bookshelf.Highly, highly recommended.

The bartenders behind PDT are absolute, mad geniuses. If you want to make a cocktail that will blow your customers' or your friends' minds, this is the book to get. There are a lot of ingredients in here that are a little difficult or expensive to obtain, but if you put in the leg work or have a very kind restaurant owner that will let you go a bit over budget you can make some masterpieces. For those of us who don't always know exactly what to look for in a spirit (why would there be a gradation in vodka? It's vodka.) there's a helpful "What To Purchase" guide in order to have a nicely stocked and consistently delicious home or professional bar. A triple plus.

The book has nice cocktail recipes but being organized by alphabetical name is kind of a cop out. It really needed a functional organization of cocktails e.g. gin, whiskey, tequila OR sweet, tart, etc. I prefer the superior organization of cocktails in the Death and Company book.

This is a beautiful looking book, full of great artwork and a huge collection of recipes. My only gripe is that recipies are organized alphabetically by name, and that is not the most helpful way to look up certain types of drinks. I would prefer organization by season or base spirit. There is an index in the back so you can look things up that way, but the index isn't at all complete and doesn't list every recipe with a certain ingredient. Still, the collection of recipies is a good one. There's a mix of fancy recipes with rare ingredients, and accessible ideas too, though it leans towards the former.It's great that the brand names of spirits used is listed in the recipies. Also, there are instructions for how to make all the syrups and infusions, which is great.
