From School Library Journal

Gr 3-8-A sequel to Sewing School (Storey, 2010), which focused on hand stitching, this visually appealing title carries those skills over to machine sewing. It covers the basics: machine and fabric anatomy and selection, supplies needed, project preparation, and safety practices. Readers are guided step-by-step in the creation of 20 projects, with patterns enclosed in a pocket at the back. The projects have been tested by children within the book's targeted age range; are logically arranged, garnering more stars as their complexity increases; and draw on skill sets that have been previously covered. Clear, high-quality photographs and concise directions coincide with each step, while sidebars contain ideas for personalizing projects with embellishments. One chapter is devoted to correcting mistakes; hand-stitching skills needed in finishing up are contained in another. Information on creating a sewing group and a useful resource guide are included. Highlighting the many benefits acquired through learning to sew, this volume will serve adults as well as children. As a beginner's guide, it is first-rate and even encourages readers to expand their repertoire with the inclusion of more challenging techniques such as patchwork, drawstrings, and zippers. It is wonderfully designed and an ideal purchase for beginners, though its pattern pocket and spiral binding might not be best suited for heavy circulation.-Rebecca Gueorguiev, New York Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. My 9 year old got a sewing machine for her birthday and we got this go to with it. It has been really great because it teaches all the basics that you need to know like how to thread the machine or how to do a whip stitch. There are a ton of really cute reusable patterns in the book, ones that my daughter actually wanted to do and seemed relevant and fun to her. The first project that she did was making a pillow with a cute pocket on the front of it, the instructions were really clear, with lots of great pictures and examples. I helped her with the ironing, but besides that she was able to do most of it all by herself. It came out so great! Now she uses it on her bed to put her "magic" rocking in when she wants to sleep with a few. So cute! I looked at a lot of kids sewing books at Barnes and Nobles before ordering anything and this one was by far the best and most fun! If your kid is interested in learning to sew, get this book!

This book, and it's companion, Sewing School, is fantastic. My 5 ½ year old granddaughter spent a good part of Christmas day sewing pajamas for her doll using this book and the Janome sewing machine they recommend. I love the "attitude" of the authors. The book is meant to teach the child that anyone can learn to sew, sewing is fun, they can learn to do all the steps independently, perfection is not the goal, instead, it's creating something they love. I recommend both books. My granddaughter will need some help for awhile - a seven or eight year old would be independent pretty quickly with these books.

I bought this with a Singer Simple sewing machine for my 8 year-old daughter. She absolutely LOVES this book. She wants to make nearly all the projects in here. She has already completed 6 and has materials ready to start her seventh tomorrow! I haven't sewn since middle school home-ec, and this resource teaches all we need to know. My daughter is able to do almost everything completely on her own. She just beams with pride and enjoyment as each project is completed. Great items to make for friends as gifts. The fabric store has become a magical place and we are also planning to use outgrown favorite clothing as materials for projects!

My boys love this book! I got it for them for their birthday and they have taken off sewing. We adjusted some of the projects which did make them a bit more difficult (thus needing more help from Mom), but they would have been fine as instructed. It really delights me to see my boys sewing with such joy the way my brother and I learned. This is a great guidebook!

I purchased several sewing books for my grandchildren so they would learn the correct way to sew. I've found all of them to be well written and helpful. This series is one of their favorites, easy to read and understand. Their other favorite set is the Winky Cherry System, that Palmer Plestch recommends and buying the DVD - Yes, I can Sew was a huge help ! The projects are easy and you can purchase the kits so they have everything they need to complete the project except for basic sewing tools.

This book is the sequel to Sewing School: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make. The projects in the original book ignited my daughter's interest in sewing. After reading the positive reviews of Sewing School 2, the book seemed like the next obvious step in our sewing journey. However, the projects in the second volume were not as inspired as those in the first book. The real strength of Sewing School 2 is the clarity of machine instruction. Each aspect of using a sewing machine is clearly explained and accompanied by a photo. I especially appreciated the suggestions given by the book about what things to consider when purchasing a machine for a child to use. We ended up purchasing the Janome 10-Stitch Portable Compact Sewing Machine (fuschia and yellow!). I have no doubt that we will continue to refer to the book in the future. However, we will likely be reviewing the "sewing machine instruction" pages rather than the creative projects.

My 8 year old daughter was really excited about her new sewing machine and this book was a great companion! It also took some stress off of me. She sat down and read the beginning and was very anxious to start. We didn't exactly follow the order of lessons but we have , with very little me and a lot of just her, made two nice travel pillows, the "Sleepy Bear" project and an "Art to go go" project but the bathroom version. She loves to read about the different ideas and we would definitely recommend this book ;)

This is a fantastic book! I purchased for my granddaughter to use with her new sewing machine. BTW, when my second granddaughter received a sewing machine, I made sure she received this book as well. The book is well designed with each lesson building on the previous. Definitely, well made with kid-use in mind—the spiral binding makes it easy to read and go through each of the lessons. This is the perfect addition for anyone giving a sewing machine or with a child who just received a sewing machine. Wonderful way to learn about your sewing machine, develop basic sewing skills, make fun and useful things, and have fun at the same time. This is a must have!
